223 heavy bullets loads

Hi Kian

There is a ton of info right here on this sight under the side bar labeled 223 on the main Home page.
Reading through that information it lists a bunch of options and how to load for the type of shooting you plan on doing.
I guess what Im getting at is you left us with a somewhat wide open question.
We need to know
Type of rifle, with twist rate, we got that) and barrel length and chamber type? Is it a gas gun, semi Auto) or a Bolt action or other?
Type of powder on hand, along with Brass type and primers.
And type of shooting wouldnt hurt any either.

If its for a NRA service Rifle I have some great loads that work well. If its a Bolt action I can help a little there as well.

Shoot good be safe and have fun

Sorry, your right need alittle more information.

savage SA model 12 with factory 1--7 twist
barrel is 26'
standard 223 chamber zero work done to it

Looking at anything 75--80 range

I have looked at the side bar at the loads, but was also looking for some more real life loads from the guys on the site.

H4895 or RL15 will be your new friends. :)

You have a model 12 with a 1:7 twist??? Thought those only came on the LRPV/Target actions.

Awsome that is alot better.

Are you sure its a 1:7 and not a 1:9??? In wich case the 77 and 80's are out., maybe)

A few good powders. for Heavies 69gr+
Varget 23 to ....
R15 23 to....
2520 24 to....
N140 23 to....

Primers: CCI, Wolf, Feds

Brass.

I have good experience with Winchester and Lake City.
Lapua if you want to spend the money.

If you have a1:9 twist then a 75gr AMAX or a Berger 73 would be a good choice. But dont discount the Sierra 69gr MK, My Savage 1:9 112 Loved them.

These are MY choices and there is a bunch of other ways to go but this has worked for me.

The Dominion of Canada Rifle Association, Winter/Spring 2008 newsletter, called 'The Marksman' has a very extensive article on shooting heavy bullets in the 223 Remington out to 1000 yards. The article on heavy bullets in a 223 begins on page 16 and you need Adobe Reader to view it. Well worth the read!

Enjoy: http://www.dcra.ca/Marksman/Winter%20Spring%202008%20Edition.pdf

I have begun testing these loads mentioned and have had very good results, but I am still in load developement. I am using a Savage 12 LRPV with a 1:7 twist barrel that has been massaged by Larry Racine. Hope I am not giving up the secret Holy Grail to 223 loads.

,FWIW, I use 24.5 grains of H4895, 69 grain Sierra MatchKing bullet seated .030' off, Lapua cases, and a Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primer in my Savage 10FP with a 1:9 twist barrel and it shoot great out past 300 - not tested it beyond.)

Russ, congratulations on your Spirit of America scores.

Thanks George.

After that match I am thinking more and more about a 223 Palma Rifle after what I witnessed by others that shot it.

I would say that if I was a XTC shooter who is shooting a AR based 223 shooter and wanted to get into the Bolt action Palma Game its a no brainer to go the 223 Route since you would have extensive knowledge in that case and all the reloading equipment to do it.

My 223 1:9 savage 69gr SMK load was 25gr Varget and a winchester primer in LC cases., caution work up to this load)

Hope to see you soon George

lake city brass, sierra 77grmk,cci br4 primer,24gr vv n-140 works really well in an ar so with a bolt gun you might get another grain of powder before you start to flaten primers
good luck and good shooting,treeman
