223 F/TR scores?

600 yards course, what are you guys averaging? I shot my first f class today at Butner. 4 matches today and four tomorrow. The wind keeps you on your toes to say the least. I a shooting 77smk's and wondering how much room 80's actually get you.

F/TR. Getting ready for todays matches. I averaged 190 for the four matchhes yesterday. My goal for today is to get a little deeper into the 190's.

Froggy Ibelieve you shoot sling right? That is awesome score!

Seriously thinking about a faster twist than my 1 in 9 so I can try outthe 80's

That is real good shooting. :) Friend of mine uses a 1-8 in 223 uses 90gr/vld, reloader15, cci450 primers, lapua brass has real good luck in a factory gun out of the box first ever 600yd match 547 out of 600 first 1k shot a 574 we worked the load up off of Laure Hollands articals in target shooter magazine they were running 2850fps over that started to show signs of to much pressure.

Bronc,

I use a Rock Creek 7.2 twist bbl for everything 22cal.. it has worked for me so well with several bullets.. I would suggest you consider it.

Thanks Froggy,I will look at those. I ran out of my BR4 primers and subsituted federal match in the N140 load. First two matches yesterday were horrible. Would not hold elevation, we had switch winds that were moving my poi by 3 minutes or more and I can not acurately judge those values yet before I shoot.

Last two matches, I switched over to my backup load of rl15 withfederal match primers( go figure) and my elevation came back in line. I waited on the winds I could judge whitch is about a minute right now and scores came back up..

188 and 192/5x for the last two.

More wind practice and a faster twist barrel!

I have been using Wolf primers and now Tula primers for a few years now.. never have failed me and I really get great numbers with those primers. I made the switch due to a few long range shooters were reporting that their verticle had increased with the BR primers and were not getting the results that they used to. I believe it was in 2007 when I made the change to Wolf primers. I love the price too! The Tula primers that I am using are the hardest fitting primers that I have ever used.. meaning that they are tight in the pocket. I don't think that you can use a hand priming tool with them, you will wear out your hand trying to get them in.. what is good about that is that they will still fit good after you have used the cases a bit.. I have been shooting 25.0 grains of RL15 in my 223 and the primers are still fitting very well in the pockets after having shot the brass 5 times now.. Unless there is a new super primer that comes out.. I don't plan to make a change anytime soon..

I've been shooting 223 at some FTR matches with the 70g Berger VLD, 25.5g Varget, Wolf primers. Factory Savage 1-9 tw. Shoots between 565-575 w/ 10-15x. When the wind is switchy, it is really tough.

Good luck

The last time I shot my .223 tube gun (Eliseo RTS) in the Palma class at 600 I had a 600-48X--which would be a 588-??X had I been shooting on the F-class target. My median score with that gun is probably a 200-14X (but like you, I'm shooting out east, where the winds aren't exactly in Rattlesnake mountain's league...), which would be a 194 on the F-class target.

The .223 can certainly shoot some very good scores at 600, and the 80s are noticeably easier to keep on the good side of the line at 9 and 3. :-)

One consideration, however, is that the 77s tend to shoot *very* well. And the more you can take out of the gun side of the equation, the easier it'll be to learn to shoot well. And, if wind makes up more of your total error (and gun/shooter makes less), then it's that much easier to pick out what the wind's doing. It might cost you a few points in the short term, but you'll become a better wind reader and better shooter faster.

I learned a tremendous amount. Hopefully we shot enough for me to get my classification. We got the results of the match and if I had of had my Marksman designation, I would have won two of the matches by a point. My goal is to keep in the 190's next match.
Going to the fullbore match in November.
