223 bullet stability chart w BC and bullet lengths

223 Remington is specified as 1 in 12 per SAAMI. The only 223/556 with 1 in 14 was an early version of the M16 sent to Viet Nam for evaluation. That twist gave the 55 gr. bullet devastating terminal ballistics but also meant that striking a leaf would destroy the bullets trajectory. The twist of the M16 was quickly changed to 1 in 12.

It shows that factory guns chambered in 223Rem should be 12tw by default (not 14tw).
I have no idea what the average factory gun twist rate is. For ARs its probably 1/8 and 1/7 for bolts not sure many went to 1/9. Is 1/14 the factory default in 2022? Not checked.

Most bolt guns are 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 now but some varmint types still come with 1 in 12. The proliferation of longer heavier bullets for the Semi Autos and newer 224 cartridges has lead to the change.

That's an interesting study. I shoot a small 40 grain so fast out of a 223 using a 1 in 12. I certainly wouldn't want anything faster then a 1 in 10.

Glad to read that most guns are not 14:1 now. For a time window of my checking they were.
A Colt AR-15 I had back in the early 80s was 12:1. That works for this little cartridge.
But my son's cooper came in 14:1 ~15yrs ago, which I knew eliminated most 22cal bullets..
Shooting here at sea level, I had to go with custom 40gr BR bullets for the Cooper.

I didn't realize anyone actually put out a 1 in 14 223. I have to think this was a varmint rifle with the intent to use the same bullets used by the 22-250. 50 gr and less.
