.223 Bullet Help

Yes - It is a 1-12". Those 73's will work in some slower twists than a lot of bullets in that weight. That same tube won't shoot a 50 lead-free though.
Good I was putting off buying a Savage 12fv because of its 1/9 now I don't feel so bad... In a bolt I was hoping to shoot a little heavier than the 69 gr... I still wish they would make it in 1/8 though I really have been wanting a bolt .223 to play with....

I’ve shot mostly 9 twist barrels. Because all barrels are different some would stabilize 77g and some would not. 69g SMKs would reliable stabilize.

Personally, the money you are going to spend trying to find something that would work would go a long ways towards a new Remage barrel. All you have to do is get the old barrel out. Putting in a new Remage barrel is something you can easily do yourself.

...as has been said a cazillion times, up to 77 grainer should be ok in a 1:9.

But, Remington made that rifle/barrel with a 1:9 and 3 miles of freebore and why? I don’t know what you are using it for, but if it works, find a load and have a ball burning it out so you can get something a bit more mainstream, as far as twist and freebore goes. That configuration goes against any twist/weight/freebore standards. Shoot 90 SMK’s and watch them tumble end over end into the target. (Being facetious).

Stability isn’t just about getting it to shoot small and have the bullets go in point first. Long before the bullet becomes truly unstable and keyholes it loses part of its intrinsic BC due to yaw or “wobble”. The end effect is that the bullet presents a larger frontal area to the air resistance. Doesn’t mean it won’t shoot well, but you are sacrificing the BC that you are trying to gain by shooting the heavy bullet in the first place. The Berger calculator tells you how much

I have the same gun. Long freebore. I shoot the 69 SMK and am very happy letting them jump. In my experience, the Sierras like to jump. They shoot better in my customs backed off the lands. What kind of groups are you getting?
I put this gun away years ago when I got into customs. I just recently pulled it out and put a new scope on it. I have a bunch of 77 Sierra’s. When I get her shooting again, I’ll let you know.
I too had this same rifle years ago and probably put 4-5k rounds through it with the 69SMk. 26gr Varget and it was a shooter. I've since went to an 8 twist custom shooting the 80.5 gr Berger Fullbores, and wish i did years ago. That 69smk load was good for me out to 700 or so. I couldnt get consistency at 900-1000 with it though.

My Savage 223 Bbl. w/ 1-9 shoots both 77's out to 300 yds with no problems.
Like others have said, give them a try. My best results were with N-135 & 140. also with 23.5 of I 4064, since you can seat the bullets out past Mag. length.
My 1:9 Savage won't stabilize 75 ELDs (longer than 77SMKs by a good bit). So 77 SMKs are probably near the bubble depending on whether you have a "slow 9" or a "fast 9". Mine is slow enough that even though the 73s are stable, they aren't very accurate. 69 SMKs seems much better for accuracy. 69s will take you to 600y but give up windage.

I can shoot 77 Tipped Matchkings with Varget and H4895 in a 1/9 Remington 700 with 20" barrel. They are loaded at AR mag length . You never know till you try.
yes that bullet is shorter then the 75 and 80 grain bullets. so you can get away with a 1x9 twist

me and my friends had savage rifles 1x9 in the 90's and when they came out they shot the 75 gr Amax very accurately. my friend bought a savage in 2010 with a 1x9 twist. would not shoot the long 75-80 grain had to go to the shorter 77 gr. so the old rifles had a maybe a 1x8.5 while the newer ones maybe a little over 1x9

I've done OK with 77 SMKs in a 1 in 9 twist. Warm days, higher elevations, and faster muzzle velocities are your friend in these borderline situations. The 77 SMK is a sweet bullet. Worth a try.

Your 9T, may or may not be exactly 9T. What is the twist window on a given button barrel advertised twist rate?
