.223 AI velocity Expectations

Centershot- Maximum velocity will be more in a longer barrel.I can't offer any info on 53 grainers. I have 2 223 ackleys now. My Rem 700 has a 26 inch Krieger and my load with 40 gr vmax is at 4150 fps. I also have a Stolle with a 21 inch barrel and maximum with the 40 grainers in that barrel is 3900 fps. Prairie dogs can't tell the differnce though.

H335 will give some very long barrel life in this case with ALL bullet weights producing extremely small groups.

H335/WC844 is surprisingly clean when you get it in the upper pressure range, for a 'dirty nasty ball powder'. MSDS shows the tin dioxide compound just like 'CFE'.

JUST PUT A SHILEN S MATCH SS #7 26'' 14 TWIST 223 ACKLEY ON A NEW 700 ACTION INLAID MY GREYBULL STOCK READY TO SKIM BED FRIDAY CAN'T WAIT TO SHOOT THIS LITTLE RAT GOING TO TRY 53 GR V-MAXS HOPE THEY WORK!!

Why do you need a 22-250 with those MV!!!!! Thats good info. Im considering doing one myself as im falling in love with AI cartridges. What it feed like from a Mag? My 223 is a varmint rifle with 10 shot AICS mag.
My 223Ai feeds just fine from the 10rd AICS mags or the MDT polymer mags.

Might have trouble with the 53 vmax in a 14 twist, don't be surprised if they keyhole. 53 vmax is a long bullet for its weight.

GROCMAX YA THAT A FAT FINGER TYPO IT A 12 TWIST I TRIED TO FIX MY POST BUT ? WONT LET ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes CFE 223 has Pixie Dust in it, stuff as much as you can in that case with 40s,50s,52s,53s,and 55gr, you will see 4000+ with the 40s and and 3600+ with the 55gr. I have an 8t -10t and a 12 twist AIs all 28" and they are each 100 FPS + faster than they other with the 12 being the fastest followed by the 10t and then they 8t respectively.

What is the velocity boost that I can expect out of the AI version of the .223? I would probably load 53 grain V-Max. I have a .222x35 that went from about 3100 to 3500fps out of my rifle. I shot it twice with 50 grainers and was amazed at the jump in FPS.

centershot,
For what it's worth (probably not much) I've long read and been told that you do get an increase in velocity using a longer barrel. That's all well and good, but I also am concerned with "accuracy." People often confuse "velocity" with "accuracy" and the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. In other words, an increase in velocity doesn't necessarily equate to better accuracy, not to mention a good chance of an increase in pressure when using more powder to get a hotter load. Gotta see (test) what your particular rifle will produce when "kicking" your loads. Just food for thought.

Some people still report issues with a 12 twist and the 53 vmax, but not the normal 'match' 52-53g bullets. Its quite long for its weight, all you can do is try them.

I ordered a Shilen pre chambered replacement barrel for my Savage. 26 inch, 12 twist. Does anyone use or have tried Benchmark or LT-32 with 53 grain bullets?

I don't know if this counts but use BM for PD round fireforming 223AI and the 53vmax. It can go faster but the accurate fireform load was 3370fps at AR mag length. Its a bit over Hodgdon max published load for 223 (slightly compressed) , is accurate and results in a fully formed case. I'll revisit powders once I get enough cases formed, but 3700 with the 53 vmax appears to be quite doable without stressing the cases on a wide variety of powders.

SO FAR MY 12TWIST AND THE 53 GR V-MAX LOAD TEST IS DOING FINE AT 100 AND 200 SHOOTING IN THE .2'S AT 100 W/IMR-8208 XBR AND 205M PRIMERS GOING TO SEE WHAT I GET AT 200 NOW!

I read somewhere that the 223AI was called "the magic cartridge". because of the speeds one got. Mine has not disappointed me! My biggest complaint is mine did not feed from a mag, so I converted it to a single shot. Still an occasional struggle but I rarely need a second shot on varmints.

Any pressure data available for the magic?

I have one and there’s no magic. Just expected velocity gain over a 223 loaded to similar pressures. Ackleys don’t show the pressure of course like a standard case does and this is where the “magic” happens I believe!
