.223 Ackley velocities

What velocities can one expect with a 25'' barrel and 53 grain bullets.. And with what powder.

Appreciate any input!
A 25" barrel, 50 and 55gr bullets, no 53's. Schneider 14twist, chamber .250 nk, 0 fb. IMI brass, 7-1/2
50 - VV133 - 3825
55 - VV135 - 3650
Accuracy loads.

I haven’t shot the 53s, but I got the following when I chrono’d some of my loads.
52 grain Bergers @ 3524 fps with AR Comp
52 grain Bergers @ 3653 fps with TAC
50 grain Ballistic tips @ 3546 fps with TAC
55 grain Hornady SX @ 3418 fps with TAC
I just started using Benchmark with some 52 grain customs and they are shooting tight but have not ran through chrono.
Rifle is a 24” barreled Cooper 223ai ground hog getter for when I’m trying to keep the noise down.

I don’t know why, but I realize people have different experiences regarding the .223AI, I’ve chambered up more then a few barrels for myself....I did it because of what I noticed another fella doing and the results he was enjoying.

Mainly significantly more velocity, and more importantly, superb accuracy.
Ordered a PTG .223AI .249NK minimum specs zero freebore reamer.....my results using good quality barrels have exceeded my expectations.

I’ve had almost no primer pocket problems, BUT, I use L.C. Brass or it’s equivalent......other brass can exhibit primer pocket expansion in short order.

A 22” Krieger or Bartline barrel both deliver 3940fps using both 40 grain Vmax or 40 grain SBK’s, the Krieger prefers V.M. & the Bartline prefers SBK’s while using Reloder 7 and a CCI450.....and using 50 grain bullet can easily approach’s lower 22-250 velocities, however I won’t note the charge weight as each person need to do their own load work up.

This past June shooting prairie dogs in S.D., I fired 175 rounds (40 grain SBK’s) without cleaning the Bartline barrel. Then came home and shot a 10 shot group on that barrel, without any cleaning of any kind in the backyard at 140 yards which a dime easily covered.......then I cleaned the barrel, it cleaned up easily......no case or primer pocket issues of any kind.....yet still the 100-150fps gain over the standard .223 viewpoint remains and I don’t know why......BUT this is still America and every man is entitled to his viewpoint.

Me, I’ll continue to shoot the .223AI at velocities above what’s commonly noted, with bughole accuracy......I love this country!!

Oh, I’ve been shooting the .223AI for at least 15 years........

Hey, this is actually my first post here, but I read most of Ackleyman’s and AckleymanII’s posts before having my 223AI chambered last spring. It’s a 26” K&P Barrel, 6 groove, 1:12 twist, .252 neck, 0 freebore.

I just shot this group today. 50gr Blitzking over a stout load of N133 at 2.290” OAL. Fire formed PSD brass and a CCI 450 primer. This is definitely a load to work up to; I’m not even sure that I’m completely comfortable loading it for field use, but man does it move. I’d like to get the SD down a little more, we’ll see what happens.

There were a lot of naysayers when I brought up my thoughts about this chambering, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I haven’t been hand loading for very long, but this is by far the easiest rifle I have ever loaded for.

Thank you Ackleyman!!

Nice shooting.

Naysayers? My experience with them is they improve the velocity and accuracy of the little 223 Rem.

K&P used to be in Raton, NM.
I get 3600 with a 53 vmax. Might have to try some 50's. The AI gets pretty close to my 22br

223AI w/Pac-Nor 24" SS Super Match, M700:
3,680 fps with H335 and Nosler 50gr BT's, 7-1/2, Laupa case......shoots in the .3's or high .2's.
Both ground squirrels and PD's do NOT like the combination. Shoots flat, hits 'em hard.

I went with a fast twist Bartlein 27" for heavies (80+ grain). Not seeing the velocities mentioned here but still impressed. Stiller action, Manners T5A, M5 style bottom metal with a modified AICS magazine, and a NF NXS 8-32. Not a little or lightweight rifle but I can watch my trace when the weather is right as recoil is about zero with a muzzle brake (obnoxious though).

I use Lapua brass and have never lost a case to primer pocket issues. Favorite load is with a Berger 80 VLD, Varget, and a 450. Trimming cases is not necessary and sizing cases is almost too easy. I could easily get more velocity with a bigger case but this little thing is fun and different.

I’m reading good case life and velocity. Anyone have this in a short range br rig? Wonder if it would agg.
