223 Ackley 40*

Looking at a 223 build in a 223 Ackley and am considering a 27" bbl, in an effort to maximize velocity.
Is the 27" worth going for, or would one be just as well off using a shorter bbl, say 25" or 26"?
Will be using the 75-77g bullets and maybe an occasional 80.
Would especially like to hear of the velocities being gotten from a 27", if there are some w/ hands-on experience.

3050 fps w/80 gr. A-Max from a 8tw 26" here. If the weight doesn't affect your application I would go as long as you can. JMHO

I'm running an ER Shaw 26" 9 twist. I'm running the 73gr Bergers at 3250 and getting consistent 1/2 moa groups out to 300yrds. I'm using Ramshot TAC powder and BR4 primers. In my opinion 27 would be a good length but I can't speak for how much speed u would gain.

With that cartridge you are probably at the point of diminishing returns beyond 26" You have to first answer for yourself how much extra velocity you need to justify carrying the extra barrel length.

Suppose 26" gave you 3050 fps, and 27" gave you 3075 (only 25 extra), would you feel it's worth it? Would you go to 30"even if it eked out only an extra 10 fps?
