223 8 twist

Gday,
Was wanting opinions on 8twist for 80.5 bergers and 80gr amaxes would this twist rate be ok.
This is for 300yrd to 900yrd mainly 300 to 600 target for my son,
Do you think I should use 1.7twist this would mean longer wait time for me .
I have an 8twist tru flight slanted groove at 30in already sitting in wait for me to use already so no wait time.
Have no plans to shoot the 90s as restricted to 80gr projectiles.

Cheers Trev.

That's about the upper limit for 1:8 twist in shorter barrels (AR15) but I think with a 30" tube your velocity will be high enough to give you the extra rpm to stabilize 80 grain bullets.

Look at the berger stability calculator and you will find the Berger 80.5gr and 80gr SMK are the best 224 bullets for 223 rem with 8T. The 80gr Amax loses BC due to not tbeing as stable and ends up being less in performance then the SMK and Berger.

Gday,
Thanks for replies I myself probably wont get much use out of it due to poor health just setting up for my son to get him up and running
Hes 11yr old he comes to club shoots with me he will have my comp rifles when I fall of the perch.
I may try hunt down a 7 twist if I can but for me time is a factor so thanks again for replies.

Cheers Trev

Trev, I shoot the 80SMK's out of a 28 in a 7.7 twist. They shoot absolutely awesome. A fellow shooter uses the 90's in his 8 TW. They shoot same. Hope this helps. Don't know what powder you're using but IMR 8208 XBR is THE ticket! I think getting your son involved is a fantastic move! You're a good dad!! He's a lucky son!! Although I hope you don't fall of the perch any time within the next couple hundred years ! Best regards, Happy Thanksgiving, Dwight in Louisiana. 8)

7.7 twist would be better than an 8 twist. My first 26" 223 is 1 in 8 and shoots 80 VLD well but the new one is 7.7 twist and it appears that it's going to do even better, especially at longer ranges.

There's nothing wrong with an 8 Twist. I shoot a JP 223 with an 18" barrel using the 80 grain sierras and I believe 23.0 grains of Varget. This rifle just hammers.

Here's a 5 shot group at 200 yards and at the time was only the 3rd five shot group from the rifle after the break in procedure.

I shot neck in neck with a custom rifle at 300 yards shooting tums with this rifle.

Here's the rifle.

Gday,
Thanks guys for your replies I have the 8twist laying around here so I will go with it my lad can start saving his pocket money for a seven later but hes pretty keen to jump up to bigger calibers Im trying to pull the reins back abit on him.
He loves the shooting not that keen on scoring and going dow to the butts and work the targets told him he may aswell learn all that part while hes waiting for his rifle to be finished.
Im using ADI 2206H and 2208 you H4895 and Varget with lapua brass and CCI 450s or BR4s im sure I will sort out a load with that lot anyway thanks again for your replies if anyone has some tips on loading the 223 please feel free to fill me in.

Cheers Trev

Lol,
Had a chuckle there we should have one another excuse for another public holiday but americans do celebrate it here so hope you all have a happy thanksgiving day .

Cheers Trev.

Unless you're running them at high velocities (> 2900 fps), high elevation, and/or high temps, the 8-twist is just a little bit slow for the 80.5s. You'll be giving up a small percentage of maximum BC by using that twist. Is it a deal-breaker? Probably not. You might not ever notice it, particularly if you point your bullets. However, I'd go with the 7-twist if at all possible, even with the longer lead time. How many years do you expect to be shooting the rifle? Is a few extra months wait not worth the potential improvement in performance and bullet selection?
1/7 is the way to go

try 24.5 to 24.9 varget, kissing lands it works

manitou210,
Thanks for the reply will be doing full load work up with varget and H4895 using cci 450 primers as the br4s have had a crazy price rise here in oz over $100 au for a thousand thats just nuts.
Chamber will be .100 freebore so until barrel is done cant do any measurements wont be until after new year.

I love my .223 Rem with a 23" Bartlein 8 twist barrel. I shoot the 75 grain Amax with a Lapua case filled with 24.5 grains of Varget. I like the 75 Amax's more than the 80 SMK's. They shoots more accurate and flatter out of my rifle. I hear a 7.7 twist or even a 7 twist is best for the 80 grain Amax's. Some say their 8 twist shoot them fine though ??? A fast twist .223 shooting a heavier bullet at long range is just about as fun as it can get! Zero kick, zero blast, watch impacts and just simply a joy to shoot.

Run the berger stability calc and you will see that the 80gr SMK and 80gr Berger are the best 80gr class bullets at normal 223 MV.

The BC reduction is the least with the two above bullets.

I ended up liking the 75g Amaxs over all the 80 grain bullets. The BC is .435 which is higher than the 80g SMK's and just under the Bergers.
