222 Remington

Yes indeed, it may never again win the match, but it will send many home wondering why there 6mm PPC got dethroned by a triple deuce! I fully intend to have one together for next season to do exactly that. The past months I got everything in order to do just that, the only thing left is chambering the Shilen Select Match 1-14 barrel to complete!
Best match at 100 I had was a 250-13x. Usually 8 to 10 xs, about half the time 249s. When I bought my first 6ppc I loved those fat bullets, lol.

I always love seeing a 222 thread pop up, granted this one was started three years ago. Seems like the triple deuce still holds a spot in many shooters hearts, many of us grew up with one or knew someone who had one not to mention all the guys who used to shoot competition with it pre PPC. It’s definitely one of my favs if not my favorite.

It may just be me wishing but it seems the 222 might be making a comeback of sorts, I see it mentioned more lately than I have in awhile. I have a few 222s and a ton of Lapua brass, I decided I’d make 20-222 this year, been wanting to do that for a long time now and that little case seems to be good fit.

Lapua is temporarily suspending production, not discontinuing it. They state: "It is our intention to resume production of these products as soon as market conditions stabilize."

And now Lapua is discontinuing the brass!:(
I hope Lapua resumes production at a later date, it’s great brass. In the mean time Starline is making it and it can be back ordered, I’ve ordered the brass that list for back order and delivery times have been a couple days to 5-6 weeks. Here’s a link for anyone interested. It’s not Lapua but it’s good brass. I just ordered 500, very reasonable.

To me the key phrase is
" It is our intention " heard that many times before I wouldnt bet the farm on it anytime soon anyway.

The few times I have shot my deuce in a match I did surprisingly well with it, even at 200. The deuce is certainly capable of putting ppc’s under it.
Youm going to shoot a standard 222 and turned necks and what free bore .
?

I opted for a zero freebore, .250" diameter neck and a 1 deg-30 min lead angle. I can use Lapua match brass without turning necks. With Nosler Permium brass i need to turn the necks to .012" thickness. I size the brass with a Redding Type S bushing die with a .245 bushing and do not expand the neck. I am getting my best groups at .002" off of jam with .002" neck tension. It shoots consistently in the 2's without reading the wind.

My deuce is an old sleeved 700 in standard .222 with a .244nk Seely Masker built. Not sure of the freebore and is in HV configuration. It is a cream puff in the bags and a joy to shoot.

For those concerned about the lack of Lapua .222 brass, it should be a fairly easy process to form some out of .223 Lapua brass If it becomes necessary.
