222 rem

Well, I know the Sav. 340 can be accurate....I had one in .22 Hornet long time ago....and it was very accurate. I do remember having to re-tap the side mounting scope mount holes because they stripped. First I would confirm that it is a rifle problem. You should use some type of ribbons placed along the range and only shoot when they show the same condition. Also, make sure all parallax is adjusted out of your scope. Make sure your shooting platform is solid and since that models trigger pull is quite hard, shooting decent groups takes a lot of concentration. 22 calibers seem to favor a good jump...at least .060"...I would stick to 50 gr. bullets playing with seat depth. Due to the rifles design (with no rear action mtg. screw), your idea to bed between the 2 mtg. screws has merit. Also experiment with tightening torque on these screws....and check how solid the scope mount is fastened to the receiver...it's cantilever design can attenuate problems.

here is what the 222 loaded with 40 grn ballistic tips was doing today

On the 340 savage...a friend had one that I worked on a long time back. If I remember correctly, both ends of the barrel band were attached to a sort of square nut that was drawn down into the forend by a screw. On his, the nut was bottoming, which a little wood removal cured. The one action screw was threaded into the center of the recoil lug (if memory serves) and I made sure that there was even contact on either side, next to the lug, like a V block, just in front of that (I think) everywhere else I made sure that the stock did not touch. After that treatment, with some handloads, it shot pretty well.

Hi Calib,

I have had very good success with N-133, RL-7, H-4198, and XBR-8208. However, one powder that I had never considered, I finally tried. After talking with Mike Walker, I tried IMR-4895, at his insistence. I figured that if the designer of the cartridge gives this kind of a recommendation, it is worth checking. Because of Mike telling me this, I use a LOT of IMR-4895. It will not deliver the top velocities, but I have found that it does deliver some of the most consistent accuracy that I have ever had from my Remington 788. With either a Speer 50 grain TNT, or the Berger 52 grain bullets, this rifle will hold just under .5 MOA very easy on the bench all day long. Mike said that the load Sierra shows for the accuracy load for the 52 grain bullet is very close to the load that he used for testing the .222 in the Remington Custom Shop when he ran it. I hope that this information will be of interest to you, and all of the other "Deuce" shooters.

I like the Speer 50g TNT with H322 at around 3200fps. I load them a little longer. They fit just fine in my Rem 788. I get .50"-.75", 4 shot groups at 100 yards. I have killed woodchucks in upstate NY and Pa. but no "yotes" yet, (not for the lack of trying though). If I manage to kill one, I will post results here.

Good luck
Mike

P.S. I also liked RL7 or H322 with Hornady 50g spsx

i have some speer 50 and 52 grain hollow points, just havent shot them yet out of this gun, i will have to try some. good luck with those dogs, make sure to let me know how that bullet works on it.

Just finished loading 100 rounds with 24gr 748 using 53gr Barnes for a Sako Vixen. Very hard to distinguish the holes at 100m because they overlap.

I have thought about maybe selling my gun to turn it in to a tikka in 222. I like the round especially for calling coyotes.

The 222 is one of my favorites! Had been shooting 50-52 range (50 Sierra Blitz, 50 V-MAX, 50 Blitzking, 50 TNT, 52 Sierra HPBT, etc.), but then somebody turned me onto a load with 40 V-MAX's and I haven't looked back.

21.0 IMR-4198
CCI 400 Small Rifle Primer - and this is the key. I've shot plenty of Rem 7 1/2 BR's, but don't do it on this one!
40gr Hornady V-MAX
Standard "Book COL", 2.130".
(I'm reloading factory brass from Hornady... where for years I shot their Custom Ammo using 50 V-MAX Moly's)

This one does 3,300 fps out of my Rem 700 BDL and is capable of producing 1-hole groups at 100 yards. It is an amazingly accurate load in my gun, with a great bullet that seems to be able to go the distance just fine. Anything I hit with this is DRT. I used a 24x scope during load development, and as I say - played with a lot of different bullets and powder combo's. Second on my list would probably be a 50 Speer TNT using Rem 7 1/2's and 20.5 of 4198 powder. But I figure this 40 has given me another good 50 yards of flat shooting over the 50/52 grain options. Something to consider if you're really trying to stretch yours to 300 yards (which won't be consistently effective for you in my view). I shot a fox the other year, on the move, out to about 286 or so, but if you keep your shots to within 250 yards - this one will git-r-done.

Wow, as a new triple deuce loader, I find this thread extra useful! I'm glad I grabbed some H-335, but I'll try some IMR 4198 too.

FYI, AR-Comp works ok, but no-where near max-pressure. As others have said, Its hard to make the deuce shoot bad.

i am wondering about trying the v max and see how it compares to the nosler ballistic tip, they are way cheaper, same weight. should i be ok with them?

The only difference that i have noticed is that the nosler jacket is a little thicker, i have shot them all out of my 222. I noticed that the sierra BK was a bit more accurate out of my remington, but you will be good with either bullet

I guess I am really just looking for the cheapest 40 grn ballistic tip style bullet, would it be better to go with the sierra or hornady

I use a 222 Sako Vixen for fox and G-hog. It shot good with most 50 grain bullets and that is what I wanted to shoot. I then spoke with someone from the woodchuck den and they suggested I try a 40 V-Max at or a little in the lands and a max dose of either H-4198 or IMR-4198. They both shot bug holes and I stuck wth Hodgdon. They run 3550fps and the fox and groundhogs HATE them. One outing I didn't bring the 6br and had a hog at 505, put one left one right and the next one got him (took about an hour)
Its a very solid 300 yard gun in good conditions (low wind) and can be streached a litte more in great conditions. At 400 yards the little 40 grainers get tricky

I tried the 40 grain V-Max bullets for a PD hunt several years ago for some testing of Moly Coating that we did at Sinclair International several years ago. We worked the load up with the use of H-4198, and chronographed them at an average velocity of 3,600 FPS. We had a dog stand up right beside our 100 yard marker stake, and since all of the other guys were using Swifts, or bigger, they told me to take the "chip" shot with the "little rifle" since he was so close. I took a mid-body shot, and cut him in half with it. I have always found that the 40 grain V-Max bullet to be very explosive on varmints. We shot the bullet in a .22 PPC bench rifle to see what they were capable with when they first came out, and we were able to shoot groups in the very low .1 range and two groups go into the high .0 range. To say the least, all of us on the Tech. Staff have been very pleased with the performance of these little bullets.

I find it odd that so many folks recommend 4198 in 222 and most everyone seems to get great results. I have 4 rifles chambered in 222 a couple oldies a Ithaca HB and a first year 788 and a couple of newer rifles a Kimber of oregon and a Steyr Mannlicher classic and with each of these rifles I have always tried the 4198 powder and I have yet to get a nice group with this powder and my rifles, odd ain't it.
