222 Rem

Hello from the land of enchantment. Looking through the load data from different manuals, I noticed something. The Hornady handbook states, that in order to make a 40 gr V-Max go 3200 fps from a 24" barrel. the required amount of IMR 4198 is 18.3 gr. Now roll over to the Nosler info. All other things being equal, to make the 40 gr spitzer hit 3100 fps requires 19 grs.

So the question is, why does it take less powder to make the 40 gr V-Max go faster then the other 40 grainers??

Thanks in advance,

Thad

ThadJB: I'd guess different bullets, Hornady vs. Nosler) and different test equipment used by Hornady & Nosler. Best load for my Sako Vixen, 1-16 twist factory barrel is 26.5 grs. H322 w/ 40 gr. Hornady V-max at a chrono. velocity of 3350 fps., that's with the 222 Rem. Mag. Another Sako Vixen with a Hart 1-14 twist "likes" 22.2 grs H322 w/ 50 gr. Hornady V-max at a chrono. velocity of 3065. with the 222 Rem. The 222 load is recommended by Hodgdon. Both excellent, close to 1/2 moa.:)

Keep in mind that if you take 10 rifles from the same maker, in the same caliber, with the same barrel length, you will NOT get the same velocity with the same load...

... so what you have observed is totally normal, and has nothing to do with the brand of bullet.

It could be that they had different lots of powder also. Were they using the same primers, cases, etc.? That's why you should always start lower and then work your way up. There are just so many variables that can affect how big the bang is.

Hi also with 4198 data there is a big difference in IMR and Hodgen. I have always been able to make things go faster with the H verses IMR. So be sure in the books that you don't get fooled. I made that mistake once by not noticing which one I was looking at. With a forty grain bullet the accurate 2200 is a good fast load also.

Thanks for all the input. My primary objective is a quiet, minimal recoil, fur friendly load, with extremely clean burning powder.
