.222 Rem Reamer Print

Does anyone have a print of a standard (or modified) .222 Rem reamer? I'm trying to understand throat wear (and thus bore wear) in a couple of used rifles based on how far out a seated bullet touches the lands. I'm using a split case and 50gr bullet with the Hornady measuring tool. The two rifles I've evaluated so far supposedly have a low round count, but a 50gr Speer TNT seated to the lands only has .130" of bullet shank in the case. Seems like it is really out there but I don't know if that is normal or not. My reading with the tool is 1.850 from the base to ogive. Zero freebore would be about 1.700". A .150" throat seems long for a cartridge designed around 50-55gr bullets. If it makes any difference, one barrel is a custom Hart and does have a tight neck, the other is a factory Sako L461.

I believe you would be better off finding someone with a borescope than looking for a reamer print that may or may not be anywhere close to the reamer that chambered the barrels. Scoping the barrel will show you directly the condition of the throat and fist couple inches of the bore.

my 222 had a tight neck and a loooong throat (brand new barrel).later on i was told that some of the custom match bullets were very long and the throats were set up for those. I believe the saami chambers have a generouse throat also.

From what I have heard the 222 shoots great with about .010 to .020 jump. Mine didn't mind the jump either.

I had my 222 set back and rechambered with a zero freebore 1.5 leade reamer (222). Now, touching the lands a 40 vmaxes diameter at the case mouth is .219. I believe .025 freebore is about minimum of what a person wants.

Bolt, I think you are right on with the freebore. About .020 to .030 is a good number.

Even touching the lands a 50TNT seats out pretty far. With 0 freebore it'll be about .125" down the neck. Shooting 55's and less, definitely go with no freebore. The .222 has a long neck and you don't want any freebore.

Sakos that I've had have been throated long.

i have a few 222 reamer prints but i cant post them bc it says the file is to large. if someone can resize a pdf to post let me know and ill send them

I think if you google sammi their site has at least sammi spec reamer prints on file.

Just an update as im about to order 2 reamers and one will be my 222 reamer. I just got finished measuring some lapua brass from two different boxes deciding if i will go with the simple match print or what. I grabbed 5 cases at random from each box. The match reamer speced out at 1.712" over all brass length and i guess since the 1'30" lead angle ends up with .009 freebore even though its consider a zero freebore reamer. My brass all measured 1.690-1.691 other than one piece that was 1.689, i omitted the tenths and some was 1.6915 but is a cheap caliper so i dont trust it to tenths, that what mics are for. So that means that with a zero freebore reamer your could have .022 of dead space plus the .009, so .031". I not going to look at the standard print above but i know alot of 224 cal reamers go .025" freebore your freebore might be more in the neighborhood of .056" . I recall and old VH article about making brass that actually fits your chamber because of these reasons. Anyways just a heads up. I like knowing the numbers to have a better idea of what going on or make a more informed decision.
