222 REM 100 200 YD Benchrest

From Shooting Times: about the small group record that stood for 40 years the 222 that Mac McMillan shot.

“I first became aware of the McMillans about 35 years ago when reading about a group shot by Mac in an NBRSA-sanctioned match at the Skunk Creek rifle range near Phoenix. The date was September 23, 1973, (Mac's 59th birthday) and he was shooting a 10.5-pound Light Varmint class rifle in .222 Remington. It was just about an all-McMillan rifle. Mac had built the action, and brother Pat had designed it. The rifle also had a barrel made by Pat and a fiberglass stock built by brother Gale. It wore a Leupold 12X scope that had been bumped to 24X by Wally Siebert. The dies used by Mac to make his 50-grain bullets from J4 jackets were also made by Pat. Mac's competition load consisted of Remington cases, 23.5 grains of Hodgdon BL-C (Lot No. 1), and a prototype primer that would soon thereafter be introduced by CCI as the BR-4.”

Anyone else finding it difficult to locate good brass? I’m trying to start us this caliber too, from scratch, but I’m wondering if it’s in decline.

I'm not shooting benchrest but when i was working up loads for a 788 in 222 335 and 50 gr. sx hornady was getting me 5 shots I 3/8 of an inch. Stopped right there, that was more than good enough for coyotes. Still have it and after a lot of rounds it will still stay around a half inch.

Wait. Hodgdon owns IMR. How did IMR buy Hodgdon?
It was announced at the shot show that H-4895 and H-4198 would soon be available, my post. OP made the statement about IMR/Hodgdon. My understanding is that Hodgdon packages Ramshot and IMR powders as well as the Hodgdon line.

Very much so; Lapua hasn't made any in a few years. Necking down .223 brass (still not easy to find Lapua, but at least there are other options) tends to create hearty donuts.

N133 is shooting well for me in 222.

I'm not a serious competitor, so I make my own from FC headstamp Federal brass. Tried Starline and that didn't go so well.

I did get quite a bit of Winchester 222 brass from RMR during a recent sale, but it looks like it is all sold out.

In my rifle, so far the homemade brass is shooting slightly better than the Winchester. I would guess that is because of the light neck turning on the FC brass.

are you saying H4198 will be back in stock soon. One fellow told me that IMR 4198 and Hodgen will be the same just a different cut because IMR bought Hodgen. Wonder if there’s any truth to that
That statement is false. Hodgdon Powder bought the IMR brand. H4198 and IMR4198 are made in completely different factories separated by roughly half the globe.

Hello Fellows. I’m in the process of gathering information for 222 Benchrest seems there are several powders to choose from and trying to narrow it down. Don’t really want to start by buying 10 different powders. Would like to narrow it down to 3 and would like to now what gr bullet would be best and approximate FPS they work best. Thanks Buck
W-748,
50gr Sierra Spitzers perform really well in mine
My bullets are still the cardboard packed vintage
Nowadays it looks like they're called the "Blitz varminter"
Anyhow, Sierra states these bullets in the 222 or 223 often rival their Matchkings in accuracy
I have found this to be true
