No, not at all, either would work. I certainly would lean to the slower of the two for extreme accuracy for competition. For a Varmint rig, I would lean towards the 12 twist,,,, as a 14 twist would be more critical of barrel fouling quicker than the 12 twist would. 52's will be my poison in my new 222 build, and it getting a 1-14 Shilen to give it's best chance with them.I inferred from your post that you didn't think a 52 gr bullet would shoot out of a 12 or 14 twist.....You're saying it needs faster for a 52?
But make no mistake, the 80 grain will stabilize quite easily at any speed, with the right twist,, meaning fast enough to put it to sleep. This was what I was referencing.
But slower, lighter, less recoil and barrel torque, will definitely win the extreme accuracy game in any caliber for short range BR work. It is as accurate at long range as well as an 80,,,, but reading conditions will give the heavies a much bigger advantage for most as it will be much more forgiving for missed conditions the farther out we shoot.
