222 Load

Anyone have anything good out there? ;D

I recently picked up a model older model 700 BDL, been hunting an older Remington for awhile now.

I will be using Lapua brass. I have all kinds of primers on hand. Federal match, CCI BR4's, Remington 7 1/2's, etc.

Powders I have are H322, H4198, Reloader 7, H335, and a few others that are compatable.

I'm looking for a load that won't be very temperature sensitive.

I have a really accurate load using H335 in a .223, but it prooved to be very temp sensitive from summer to winter.

I was leaning towards H322, H4198 and Reloader 7 for this reason.

But I would love to hear what you guys are having success with. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

My 2 standard loads for both my 222 chamberings, an all factory Remington 700 BDL, and a Sako L46 with a Hart barrel, both 1-14: (1) The traditional load from way back when the ctg. first came on the scene, 20.5 grs. H4198 ( never tried IMR) with any high quality 50 gr. bullet, seated .020" off. (2) The Hodgdon recommended (on their can label) 22.2 grs. H322, again with any high quality 50 gr., also seated .020" off. Over the years have tried other combinations and always keep returning to these two. Lapua brass, and Rem 7 1/2 primers, 205's, Winchester, does not seem to matter.

I have three powders that have been very good for me. The first two are VVN-133, and RL-7. The third one is IMR-4895. This last choice is one that I would never have thought of using until I had a chance to talk to the .222 Remington "Godfather" himself, Mike Walker. After he had placed an order with us, I asked him what his choice for powder for the Deuce was. His answer was immediate with the choice for only IMR-4895. He stated that you will not get your best velocities with it, but it has always delivered gilt edged accuracy. He went on to state that this was the powder of choice that was used in the Remington Custom Shop, for testing the deuce, when he was running the Custom Shop. I tried Mike's suggestion with 50, and 52 grain, bullets, and he was correct. I have tried this combination in a lot of different temps., and I have never had any problems with it. You can pretty much see that this is a good choice since the folks at Sierra use this powder for the accuracy loads with these two bullet weights in their 5th edition manual.

Last year I would have said H322 hot or cold 22.4 and a 50 grn sierra HP until I tried 4895. Now its IMR 4895 23.6 - 52 gn Berger Match with fed 205M primer and FC brass about .05 jump and my Steyr Manlicher will stack'em at 100 yards well five shot clover leaf groups that are .3s &.4s at the widest point I stopped here so I am not sure what will happen with a change in seating depth. Thats in my 222 but your milage may vary. I use it for score at our club matches. This caliber just seems to shoot well with various loads.

+3 for IMR4895, this powder in my 40X .222 shoots in the 1's and 2's without me trying, 23.5 grains with a sierra HPBT 52 grain Match bullet in 30 year old Remington brass with Fed. 205 GMM primers just kissing the lands. Awesome load!

I am going to try IMR 4895 as well. I have that on hand.

The 3 powders I plan to load up first, with a 50 grain bullet and federal 205M primer, are:

IMR 4895

Reloader7

H-4198

When the 222 was a bench rest cartridge Reloader 7 was much used. I tried the others you mentioned and ended up with Reloader 7 and a handmade 52 gr. 6 ogive bullet; it out-shot the others hands down in my rifle.
