.222 load for 50 grain bullets

Have a new .222.
Have not loaded for the .222 since the sixties.
Using 50 grain bullets what is a go to powder now?

A coincidence.... I just dug out a standard 222 that I haven't shot in 30-ish years.

Powders I am starting with are H-4198, H-322 and Benchmark.

The above powders are all good,I would like to see what IMR8208 could do as well.As. a matter of fact I think I will get out my 700BDL Varmint Special and see what she can do with it.The .222 is sure a fun one for shooting tiny groups and varmints too.

I have shot 10lbs or more of 2015 over the years in the 222. Accuracy and velocity are great. Also as mentioned H322 and RL7. Put over 6K rds through an Varmint Special over the years with the last 3K or so being the surplus Data 2200 when it was $40 a jug. Don't know if the new 2200 is identical in burn rate or not as I haven't bought any. Still have 3 jugs of left of the cheap stuff.lol

748 is also a favorite or at least used to be for the 222.

222 will work very well with a lot of different powders. I have shot AA2015 and H322 the most with 40 and 50 gr bullets. Imr8208 is a good one also. All the old timers still use IMR4198. 222 Remington is an Awesome little round. It was my favorite for years until the 20 Vartarg took over.

IMR 4198 has always done well for me, I know it's an old timer load but it works and works well.

Some of the mentioned powders are very accurate. If you have a velocity criteria, many of them are too slow. You could fill the casing to the top and not have excessive pressure.

Here is some of my test targets using VV133 using a Berger 52 grain FB moly coated

And here's a test target using Benchmark

These are shot out of a winchester Heavy Varmint using winchester brass and 205m primers.

I don't think my loads are really hot, no pressure signs, but I'm getting 3350 with a 52g and 4198 out of an older Sako walking varmint rifle.

+1 to all of the above, and add IMR 3031 to the list too. Long grains, but performs well in my 788 (22" barrel).

back in the '90s it was 24.5gr of h322 with a hornady 50gr sp. i got rid of the gun, savage m340?, after i shot 4000 rounds thru the barrel. the guy before me said he shot around 1500 rounds thru it. the stock was a real nice piece of tiger stripe maple, but the gun innards looked like a cheap .22lr. but it could shoot!!!

My go to PD confidence cartridge out to 225 yds. I used Rel 7, H322, and 2015BR for 3 different 40X Rems. Velocities range from 3,000-3200 fps respectively with barrel lengths from 20-27". Even though I have a 20 Practical, I still plan on using my 222 Rem until it needs cleaning. then will go to my 223 followed by the 20 Practical for longer distances.

I looked at my records from 1974. I used IMR 4895 and IMR 4198 in a 40xbr
with rem 52gr bench rest bullets. My ave was .310 for 40 5 shot groups
Good Shooting
