222 custom action

Wanted some input on this, what do you guys think would be a good action for
a 222 that will be used for target/varmint? I passed up a saki Riihimaki due to
not being able to find parts. Sure would take a trued remy 700. But if i
could find a custom reasonably priced, would take it. Any thoughts?

I've had at least 2 700s but now have an old 722 standard made in 1958. The stock is not as good as newer models but I can still always shoot less than MOA. I like it. I personally wouldn't spend the money on a custom action, but I don't think I can shoot the difference. Maybe you can!
By the way my old .222 has a 16x steel Weaver on it and I like that too. Optics are very important. Please don't spend a bunch of money on a custom action then put a cheap scope on it. You'd be surprised how many times the opisite is true!! I'm partial to the old weavers myself and most of mine have been gone through by Bill Ackerman. If you can afford March and Nightforce more power to ya

Borden BR if your pocket book can take it. Mine is currently a 223...best shooting rifle I've ever owned.

If you can afford to treat yourself, their size is ok and never owned one, any custom from Borden or Kelbly will make you smile every time you cycle the bolt.

only issue with a 722 is the bolt has a diffrent extractor that is unobtanium if it breaks. I'd just get a 700 in a 223 bolt face, have Hart drop a 14 twist on it in a profile you like, and bed it in a stock of your fancy. I am partial to the old 40xbr stock myself, and I like Leupold 6-18 VX2 or Weaver steel T10 for hunting, and a T36 for shooting paper. I prefer a Jewell too. Run Lapua brass and a good 52 grain FB for paper and a 50 grain Vmax for groundhogs. Or even a 40 grain for varmints. Those really wake up a 222. a 50 grain TNT is good PD medicine and cheap too.

I prefer the 222 over a 223 myself.

Oh, one caveat...in single shot mode the 722/700 tends to be difficult feeding. I prefer a cone bolt, but deal with my 722 by finger feeding it.

A Borden Rimrock BR, Alpine XP, or Super Short 6 would be the shorter ones. You don't want to go much smaller in diameter - that's where the strength is.

Heck, just buy a .223 CZ 527 and have a good aftermarket barrel spun on it. Those rifles come with an adjustable, single-set trigger and a detachable box mag (or single-shot adaptors are available.) Never had a CZ that wouldn't shoot.
Bell And Carlson makes some nice HB synthetic stocks, or sometimes a wooden Varmint take-off shows up for sale.
CZ only imports the pencil-barreled American and the European drop-stock Lux model. Either can be found new for not much over 600 bucks. Still kicking myself for not snagging one of the Mexican-market .222 Varmints CZ brought in a couple years ago, so I plan on building my own, as Pac Nor can turn a barrel to a CZ Varmint contour.

I have a real shooter built on the XR-100 action, which is a single shot version of the Model Seven. If you want a repeater, the Model Seven works fine and custom triggers are readily available. Both have the same threads as a 700 and are as easily trued if wanted. No custom actions are going to be in the same ballpark pricewise as factory actions (in reference to your remark about reasonably priced custom actions). If price is not a concern, numerous custom actions are available.

Back in the old days when the triple deuce ruled the roost in Bench rest, most to the winners were shooting 722 Rem actions. Which were new at the time.

Haverkamp makes a nice custom action with a coned bolt and trigger hanger for just over $900
