I am a recent 222 convert, CZ Ebony Edition 1:14 twist. Shooting Sierra MatchKing 52 grain with 20gr 4198 (ADR2206) and Winchester primers. 0.5" groups@ 100 yards off a bipod and rear sand bag. I have not chrono'd as yet.
I am also looking to trial Barnes TTSX 53 grain as a small deer cartridge (fallow only) but will see how they stablize.
The Sierra effectively penetrates 18mm of plywood, then 260mm of ballistic jelly when fired from my sons .223, and still retains around 32 grains of its original projectile weight.
wow this is FUN

I shot the 222 for many years hunting ghogs (60's and 70's) with a standard sporter Remington 700, 24" barrel using IMR 4198 and 50 grain Sierra Bullets. This combo shot consistently in the 1/2 moa range. I never tried anything other combo because this worked to well. In those days I didn't keep account of how many ghogs I shot but it was several hundred over a five year period. Out to 200 yards I was in the 95% kill ratio but I was also a lot younger and more steady.
The 222 is a great cartridge. After I shot the barrel out I replaced it with a 223 Rem match barrel. The extra 100 f/s is an advantage for me for hunting. I know it's comparing apples and oranges since my new barrel is a match heavy barrel but I've experience a slight gain in accuracy. Still I miss the old 222 sporter. With the 223 I use H4895 and it work extremely well for me.
STILL SHOT THAT SAME RIFLE TODAY AND IT STILL SHOOTS BUG HOLES !!!!!!!hi folks,
back in the 90's i shot bench rest with a 222 rem 40xbr, my goal was to shoot 1/4" groups, you could shoot 3's all day long, but if you watched and learned the wind, 1/4" where easy. had a jewel trigger in it. i like the norma brass best. imr 4198 was my powder. any thing over 21.0 gn, shot small groups, but a little to hot, with flat primers. remington had 52 gn br bullets, very good, but found that jeff fowlers 52's shot better. with all that being said, there are no bad tripledeuces. good shooting.....dan
which model Tikka, and how well did it shoot?I used BLC2 in my 222's. I should have kept the Tikka. Barlow
I always used W748 in my BR rifle. Winchester primers, Winchester brass, shot like a champ. I also used the same combination in a 722 with a Hart barrel, same reamer as the BR rifle. I wish I still had the 722.I know back in it's heyday a lot of benchrest shooters got away from 4198 in the deuce because it doesn't run through a powder thrower well but other than that is there any reason not to use it in a 222 nowadays.
I guess what I'm asking is, powder throwing aside, is there anything that much better for the 222 (normal 50-55gn bullets) than 4198?
I still shoot a old time 6X47 and the gun was made in 1976 and will still shoot a .172 group .MS -
Howdy !
Yeh, there is. Reknowned benchrest shooter Fred Sinclair advised me to use 4895 in .222 ( 52 -53gr bullets ). Back when he made that
recommendation, IMR 4895 would have been the prevailing version. Fred held a world record or 2 for small group, and knew his way around .222,
Deuc MAg; and ( olde tyme ) 6X47.
Best of luck in your endeavors !

DittoWay back in the day, 19.5 gr of IMR4198 and a 52 gr Sisk bullet was the cat's meow.
I am about ready to order my 222 barrel and plan to shoot 40gr Noslers. They recommend 1:14, but I think 1:12 may work better as I plan to keep these around 3200fps. What twist barrel is your gun that worked with the 40gr and 4198?A zombie thread for sure, but none the less a good one.
I am new to the 222. Tried numerous powders and bullets. I went what I tried first 4198 and a 40 grain bullet.
I shoot 40 grain V-Max's with IMR4198 in my 222. It's a 12 twist Krieger, and it shoots great!I am about ready to order my 222 barrel and plan to shoot 40gr Noslers. I need to try that combo. Thanks for posting.Walt Berger set some records with H335 in the 222 and his own 52's back in the day prior to the 6ppc. I got offered the balance of his 20 lb keg left overs after he converted to the 6ppc. Everyone else was shooting H322 and he was shooting H335, rem 7 1/2 with HOT loads.
