221 Fireball powder for Remington 700 rifle

LHSmith, this is not a competition rifle, it's a light barrel hunting gun, I need consistent speeds to make my drop chart and just can't seem to get it right. I think it's the powder.

I was getting 100+ fps ES with 18 grs of AA1680…accurate at 100 but unhappy with variation. I went 2/10 s of a grain up til I was at 19 grains total AND each increase brought the ES down. Finally around 20-25 ES and velocity was 3400+ with 40 gr bullet and great group. Said good enough, didn’t want to hot rod the brass with that grain of powder sure bumped velocity (150-175 fps) and more importantly got the ES down.

Good luck and if you work up in powder remember a couple tenths is a pretty big increase percentage wise since the case is so small.

I also have 2 barrels (12 twist and 14 twist) for my Rem 700, and they both like 15 grains H4198 with either Sierra 52 SMK or Berger 52 Target. Slower than most, but extremely accurate.
