221 FB From the horses mouth

I just got off the phone with the Remington ammo rep. and received the great news. There is no date of production for the 221 Fireball brass as they have to first meet the demand of the loaded ammo, there money maker) first. And, for those who frequent Midway USA, I'm sure you've noticed the absense of the 17 FB as well, not to mention the loaded ammo.

Thanks Remington for bringing out a product that you're unable or unwilling to support.

Sure would be nice if Lapua would jump into the game!

Seems like there would be ,IS) a great demand for quality .221 fireball brass.

No brainer?

It would be nice if anybody would come up with it just to shake up Rem. a bit. I understand that Todd Kindler is still woking on Dakota to hopefully jump into the game.

It's not that they are unwilling to support it.

The 17 FireBall was more of a success than they ever dreamed, and they never got caught up with demand, and since the fireball uses the 221 case... well, there you go.

Some ammo products like the 308, the 270,'06, 243, and 223, are in constant production with dedicated machines...

... but most of the rifle cartridges are made on a rotational basis - a machine is set up, the anticipated needs for a year or two are run, and the machine is converted over to another cartridge.

I mean, just how much .375 H&H, or 222 Magnum do they need to make at one time - same for ~90% of the catalogue.

When they make the next batch of 221,ammo and brass), expect it to disappear in a month.

Hmm, it's possible, but I kind'a doubt it. I wonder if Dakota ever paid up for the piles of 223 and Tac 20 brass they had made. Are you sure this isn't some really old news?

"When they make the next batch of 221,ammo and brass), expect it to disappear in a month."

Exactly my point. That kinda points the finger again at a lack of support. I can't seem to find many other calibers of brass that are having this problem. Remington brought it out,17 fb), it's a good caliber that's enjoying great success but how many serious shooters use factory rounds vs. their own reloads in any caliber?

I think it's pretty typical of all gun manufactures, they bring out a new cartridge, the rifle comes out 4-6 months before you can get ammo for it,empty brass 6 months after that,MABEY).They want to see if the gun will sell before they before they boost up the production on the ammo-brass.when Factory ammo is 30- 50 dollars a box, LIKE NOW )its awfull hard to try a new chambering just my opinion

I'm not trying to hurt anybody's opinion of big green. But honestly, has anyone seen the brass since last August?? We're on the approach of 9 mos without it. The 221 has been around for a long time, it is a wildcatter favorites. The 17 fireball was a tried and proven round long before it was named the 17 FB. I just wish Remington would support their product or another maker would start making it. If that happened, I can just about guarantee that Rem would have the brass on the shelves ASAP just to keep the competition from eating too much of the pie; without the threat of loss Rem can take their time and play it out at their convienence. Strictly my opinion.

You could buy the Redding forming dies and make your own unlimited supply from either .222 or .223 cases. If not then you have to wait for Remington. The brass will become available. When it does, you have to buy enough so you don't have to worry about it again.

Certainly we all have that option and most likely I'll end up doing that. But the question is, how is my forming my own brass, the answer to Remington supporting their product?

Remington has not "stopped supporting their product"... they are just behind - that's all.

This problem happens with many calibers, like 6mm Rem, 260 Rem, and dozens of others.

I have several rifles in calibers that brass becomes available every few years, and I buy up a bunch of it.

Catshooter, I'm not trying to make this personal. Even in your own words, does this seem like support to you? When I purchased my 20 VT, I based my decision on a couple of things. I did my research, spoke with Todd Kindler and a few other users, and I also spoke with the Rem ammo factory and was told by Rem that "there was a very large shipment due out at the end of Feb and another at the end of Mar. The Feb shipment cooresponded with Midways information. Now, I'm being told that there is no set date. I have a $400.00 barrel sittng in my closet because I believed what I was told by Remington.

Well Thad, I'm not going to make it personal either.

Large companies have their production schedules, and marketing goals.

If you have ever worked for a company as large as Remington, or IBM, you know that much gets screwed up by different departments tossing their needs in the pot.

There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between being screwed up on production schedules, and "not supporting a product".

When Remington made the 5mm Rimfire, they found that sales were not too good, and the abandoned all the buyers, and "Did not support the product" by not making ammo any more.

That left 60,000 owners of the rifles with NO ammo. Rem could have made a production run every three or four years, but they just walked away from it. THAT IS "NOT SUPPORTING THEIR PRODUCT!!

What is happening with the .221/17FB is that they fell behind in production goals because of bad management decisions.

So please don't misrepresent what is happening, because it is inflammatory and serves no productive end.

I'm not defending Rem's business practices, because they Piss me off too... just putting the record straight.
