220 swift

Thinking long would serve you better. You are close to Greg Tannel,I would give him a call,he may have a spare action,he is very good with 700 actions and all the tooling to make them shoot great. He also has nice shrouds and firing pins and he does great bushing the firing pin holes too.

Short action will be fine for the lighter bullets. Feeding from the magazine is tricky sometimes.

Good advice so far . I built a Swift ( 1: 8.5 Twist ) for the very longest Bullets like the 60 Vmax and various VLD's on the Short Action and would not do that again .

Factory Remingtons used a short action. My factory Ruger M77 and Savage 112V single shot both came with long actions. As a reloader I prefer the long action in a Swift.

I asked this same question and got a lot of good replies here:

I found that the short action does indeed work well for the Swift, but for me, I think that the receiver opening for a specific cartridge should be such that a loaded cartridge should be able to be dropped straight down into the action with no angling or other gyrations of the cartridge, so I would probably be more inclined to build on a long action, though, I would use a short action if need be, but that is just me.

if a guy was going to build one on a remington action should he use short or long action

A 220 Swift built on a short action Rem 700 using a 1-14tw barrel will be perfectly fine for any of the bullets you'll be using. If someone were to build a fast twist 220 Swift and wanted to shoot the heaviest .22 cal bullets like the Berger 90 grainers and wanted to stretch the OAL out as far as they could to maximize every bit of velocity they could squeeze out of a Swift, then you'd have to either single feed from a short action or build one on a long action.

Short action will be fine, I had two of them. The first was a 700 Classic and the second a heavy barreled Varmit/Synthetic and both fed from the magazine.
