220 Swift; rimmed or not?

I have a Borchardt Rifle Company action. Model of 1878 replica. I want to go with a Swift for live varmint hunting. Is there enough rim, the pundits say "Semi-rimmed". Most single shot falling block action require a real rim.

What say you?

.220 Swift is indeed a "semi-rimmed" case. It depends on if the extractor is substantial enough to engage the smaller rim. The good news is that the .220 rim is .473", the same as the .243 - .30-06 family. The body is just .445" at the base - .028" smaller than the rim. Perhaps the extractor could be modified and fitted to the .220 rim.

What does Borchardt say?

Falling block extractors, like in the Sharps Borchardt and original Winchester 1885 were designed for rimmed cartridges. While the semi-rimmed Swift case may work , it is likely that unless you pay careful attention loading it you could get the case ahead of the extractor. There is no lateral movement like in a Ruger No. 1 which does work. Also if you get too snorty with your loads and have cases reluctant to extract, the minimal purchase the extractor has may pull through the”rim”. As previously suggested do one of the 30-30 based wildcats.
