220 swift build

It was in the 1930’s and he used it because it would penetrate the bears skull without fail where as the 3006 and others would some time bounce off, he liked to catch them when they where coming out of their dens……it was a book I read some time ago I’ll dig it up if I can…….very interesting book
i think he Shot more wolfs then bears but he killed his share……if I remember he was looking out for the roads crews punching the road thru to Fairbanks? but again it’s been many many years since I read the book…..

I have a Win. Mod. 70 Heavy Varmint that i bought back in 1995 that i won a few Varmint for score matches at a local shooting club, it's a very accurate rifle with factory stainless bbl. and a trigger tweak, great old long range critter getter round, just keep it cool & properly cleaned.

I bought a group of six barreled actions one time. Pilot got sent to Japan, could not take them with him. I the group was a 26" barrel 1-12 twist Shaw 220 Swift in an 03A3 action. So being curious, I stocked the 220 with a walnut stock, drilled and tapped it, put a Burris and Tinmney on it. Took it out and did a barrel break-in, shot .2 inches with Sierra 55s. It was a very nice rifle, but I never was an 03 action fan, so it went down the road, a fellow came along at a show in Birmingham that was looking for an 03 to build a 220 on, it was love at first sight.:-)

Today I have a 22-250 AI fast twist gun (700 CM sa, trued, cut .010 over, .250 lug, bolt handle, hard chromed, Lother Walther Match 1-7 twist SS 26"with a Kipplinger single set trigger) setup for for 80 gr bullets, a very accurate rifle. A small fact, for the cam adjustable scopes, the 50 BMG cam will match the 80 grain SMK trajectory at 3,015 fps. If it helps you.

Let me know if you can find the source. A bullet delecting off the skull is usually due to a frontal shot at a shallow angle. Even if a 48gr swift hit and blew up I doubt it would penetrate.
I have seen it on very rare ossasions on large African animals.
As always the devil is in the details.

The need for speed.

I had a Hart 14Twist that was chambered in 22ppc, 24". The threads were cut off and rechambered to 22-243 AI with .020 freebore. It took around 35 rounds to work up a load with win 760 with the Sierra 60g HP at 4000 fps, and a bug hole load it is. Varget spiked pressure real fast, a .5 increse in powder charge went to ok from blow primer!

I have a 26" 14T barrel that I have yet to fire a round on with the same reamer, hope it is a screamer.

On my swift the 2700 didn't work to well, the H380 was great. I've got to change out the barrel, I got a remage from Northland with a 1/14 twist and try again. It's a Rem.700 ADL, just make there loaded right. My best was using the Berger 52gr flat base target at 3800MV

A freind told me that current lot of 2700 is running slow, had to use more, got more speed.

Key: FIND PRESSURE
I got 9 pounds I'm selling for $25 a pound, guess there's not many who reload in NW Florida. Yea I moved. Got to list it again one guy wanted it but never sent another pm after a week.
