220 Swift and 88gr Hornady ELD match

Looking for load data for 220 Swift using 88gr Hornady ELD match. Thinking of using
IMR4831.

Unless you have a 1-7" twist or faster, those 88-grain bullets aren't going to stabilize. "Standard" .220 twist ranges from 1-12" to 1-16". Of course, a custom barrel changes all of that if ordered with a fast twist.

I would try some H4350 maybe look at a 220 rocket load data, primer pockets get big fast in swift brass

Angus - I'll add that the .220 Swift may not be the best choice for pushing the 88 ELDMs due to potential jacket failure issues. I have caused jacket failures running the 88 ELDMs at ~2850 fps out a .223 Rem F-TR that has 30", 7-twist, 0.218"/0.224", 5R barrel. Jacket failure is largely an issue of friction/heat, so barrel length is an important factor in this equation. You may get away with pushing the 88s to much higher velocities (i.e. 3000+ fps) with a .220 Swift if you're using a much shorter barrel. Then again, you may not. A number of F-TR shooters have found the best approach to alleviating jacket failures with .224" "heavies" is to use a 0.219" bore barrel, rather than a 0.218" bore. Just be aware of the possibility of jacket failures with these bullets if you push them extremely fast with large cartridges and long barrels.

If you can get your hands on some RL26 I think it would make you happy.

I've got 2, 220 swifts..(love them) one is made on a 1903 Springfield action wearing a Douglas 11twist. The other is a new era Winchester model 70 wearing a kreiger 12twist..
I've been very interested on building another in a 9twist" to shoot 77grn bullets..my thoughts it would be a killer right off the gate.

I'll tag along this thread....and get more reference.

To answer your original question …. With IMR4831 use starting/mid range loads for 22-250AI or 22 Creed and work up. My 22-250AI will shoot 37-38 grs of IMR4831 with 88 Eldm but that’s hot…. If you back down to 34 grs or so to start and work up you s/b safe. Having a chronograph would be beneifical. Depending on barrel length 3000-3200 should be attainable HOWEVER as mentioned above a 7 twt might blow them up. We ve found when you approach 3200 or so in an 8 twt you can lose some. Think 300K rpm or less is a practical ceiling.
Good luck

Guess not much interest on the topic..
I will get a 9twist barrel and stuff it on one of my polish mauser's.. just debating on whether a normal swift or Ackley improved?...
I got several lbs of IMR 4955 just laying around..
I'll make it work..
This thing should be a great sniping unit with 77 SMK's.

I've been shooting 88's I'm my 22/250AI for 2 Prarie dog trips. Probably 4or 500 rounds through it so far. I have had no problems with the bullets blowing up. It's a 27 inch Bartilen 7 twist RL-22 at 3150 fps. Holds the wind pretty good.
