88 eld m or 90gr smk load in 22 Creed

I’m just starting load development for my 22 creedmoor. I’m hoping to get a good load with the new 88gr eld match bullets from Hornady. Has anyone tried these yet? My barrel is 20” 1-8 Twist so we will see how well they shoot. I’m wanting to be right at or just under 3200 FPS to use the rifle for PRS. I haven’t tried any loads yet but I’m thinking reloader 26 around 41gr. Anyone using rl26 in the 22 creedmoor?

Howdy !

Based on my experience w/ my .22-35 Remington wildcat, I'll suggest this.....

IMHO - RL-26 is perhaps too slow in burn rate, to suit your needs? Especially, in consideration of the barrel length you mentioned.

When shooting 75gr "A"-Max from my 28" .22-35Rem, it took 40.5gr of AA3100 and FED LR Match to obtain 3,420fps of my accuracy/field load.

This to me, suggests that a faster burn rate powder might be a better fit for use w/ the heavier .224" cal bullets you mentioned.

I'm also just starting my load work for my 22 Creedmoor. I will be shooting either the 75 gr Hornady or the 80.5 Berger Fullbore. Hopefully I'm banking on either H-4350 or RL 26. If you are interested I have several, "Internet" loads for the bullets I noted.

I would think RL26 to be too slow especially when coupled with a short bbl or bullets lighter than the new 95 sierras. Perhaps with a bbl length approaching 28" and the 95s you coukd get it to work reasonably well.

I have shot about 250 of the 88 eld's and got good accuracy out of a 7 twist. I assume if you can get them to 3200 in your 8 twist you will be fine and.can find a good load.

Best of luck

I have a Remington XP-100 chambered for the 22 Creed. It has a 7 twist 16" barrel and my favorite load is 90 grain MK's and RL26, S&B LR primers. Velocities are in the 2900's so that should put you close to your 3200 fps range. For what it's worth, I tried some SRP Peterson brass ( the brass was excellent and not the cause of poor performance, just the gun or loads I tried didn't work together,) and didn't have much luck with the small primers, even trying faster powders. Really wish Hornady or someone would take a hard look at making it a factory cartridge.

I actually called Hornady tech line with a BC question and I asked about standardizing the 22 creedmoor and their official response was “we can neither confirm nor deny” so it sounds promising. I’m hoping they roll out the 22 creedmoor with 88gr and 90-something loads at shot show this next year.

I don’t know what it is about rl26 but it behaves differently than other powders. It has a slow burn speed but it produces excellent results in smaller cartridges that you wouldn’t except. I’ve used it to great success in a fast twist 22-250ai that’s what makes me think it will be the go to for the 22 creedmoor as well.

I sent them an e-mail asking about making it a factory round and the response I got back was " they have looked at it but was concerned about lighter bullets blowing up, when I replied back " summit it for use with heavy bullets" they said what about the reloaders? Simple, if they load up some bullets and they come apart that will stop that or the person will just put on a barrel with a slower twist. We as handloaders have been doing this forever. Looks like this Wildcat is following the same path as the 22-250, it's getting so popular someone is bound to make it a standard cartridge. Alpha is already offering brass for it.
