just rechambered my 220 Swift to the Ackley Improved version
Was having a few issues with the original chamber so I thought I would change it out, so.
I had a 220 Swift Ackley before in a Ruger #1 was a real cool round very similar to the Weatherby Rocket.

What's the barrel life?

What's the barrel life?
I shot a Ruger number one in 220 weatherby rocket. Factory barrel rechambered, 50 grain nosler ballistic tips at 4150 was the final load. 4200 fps once it got above 80° was hard to pull the block down. Believe it or not cuz I could hardly believe it, it lasted 2,800 rounds before it finally started to go south. I shot it at a groundhog match in the fall of the year it surprised me how well it shot. By the middle of summer of the next year you could not keep them in a softball pattern at 200 yards anymore. It went in less than 100 rounds. That barrel was badly abused. I shot it out west, prairie dog hunting and on the last day of 3 hunts, if I had any rounds left for it I literally shot them all till they were gone without stopping there was smoke rolling off the front forearm. It kept on shooting. Will they all act like that no. But if well taken care of not shot hot I believe they would last for 2,000 rounds. The case has a long neck keeps the fire inside the case instead of outside burning in the steel to a degree. Just my opinion and my experience.

What's the barrel life?
couldn't tell ya, I just did it day before yesterday
I can say for sure this will not be a prairie dog rifle ( oh yeah model 70 Fthrwt )
loaded up some TBBC 55 grainers the velocity according to the data is over 4000
fire formed some brass and messed around with some 22 cal. dies I had to be able to reload them

Awesome project! Once you shoot it, would you share a picture of a fire formed case vs standard case? Who makes the dies? And any velocity/bullet combos you could share would be great also.

before and after the left is a unimproved and the right is improved
as for the bullets as of now I am using a 55 gr. Speer, Trophy bonded Bearclaw, and the velocity is what the book stated for my powder and charge and that is 4069 fps. there is no signs of pressure and I am at the max charge listed. Also there is no actual published data for this so I am using data for the 220 Weatherby Rocket. I have not shot them across a chrono as of yet so that is all I have to go by and rarely do you get what is advertised.
The critters I am after are whitetail does till the season end. 6477ece3-5f50-4629-adbf-850fe4856ed7.jpg

I love my 220 Sw AI
with 85.5 Bergers, it is hard to beat at 600 yds
at 1000, if it's windy it can still be blown around a bit more than a high BC 6mm though
But dang .... the lack of recoil is much nicer compared to a heavy 6mm cartridge
---
I have no idea what barrel life will be so I shoot it conservatively
it is one of my most accurate calibers though

my Swift has a 12 twist so I will keep bullets on the lighter side like 60-62 grains
however I do have a 22 Creedmoor on a Ruger 77 action that I push 90-95 gr bullets out of
I really like the A-Tips and the ELD's
