220 russian won't fit in 6PPC

Hey, I'm trying to get my brass ready for fireforming and I can't get the 220 russian brass to allow my bolt to close. Necks are turned and OAL (brass) is .010 shorter than the chamber length. Any input here?

Sounds like you may need a slight shoulder bump on the brass. I have trimmed 220 brass and had to slightly push back the neck / shoulder junction before.

I used a Harrels die, but a Redding body die will work as well as most any 6PPC FL die.

Unscrew the die a few turns, place the brass in the shellholder and ease the press handle down, screw the die in until you feel contact with the brass, carefully adjust a little more in on the die until you feel slight tension on the handle. It is best at this time to measure if you have a shoulder bump gauge, but if not try it in your rifle. Once you get it to chamber with bolt fully down you should be set to load for fireform. I like checking the brass with the firing pin out for better feel.

Make sure you seat bullets long so it keeps the case against the bolt face.

I've had a few that wouldn't chamber cause I hadn't cut into the neck quite deep enough when turning. If you have cut into the necks deep enough, then they need to be bumped slightly. You will need either a FL or body die to bump the shoulder back.

If you don't have either and are planning to fireform a few times and then send the cases to Harrell's for a semi-custom die, you are stuck in that chicken-and-the-egg void. Can't do one before you do the other. Boyd's suggestion to me was to buy an inexpensive 6PPC die such as the one from Hornady to do the first sizing. Later after you have a Harrell's die you can sell the Hornady die if you decide you don't want it.

I'm still in the learning phase, so take my advice only if you cross reference it with someone else's advice to confirm it.

I have a standard FL sizing die adjusted to bump the lower section of the shoulder ( where it meets the neck) back enough that the bolt can be closed. Before firing I have a double angle on the surface of the shoulder. After firing the top section (where the shoulder meets the case body) blows forward for the complete fireformed case. One normal firing = one fully formed case. Works for me. ;)

Thanks for all the replies guys. I wasn't turning necks far enough. I'm going now, Thanks again.

Next time, first bump the shoulders back for a snug fit while they're still virgin 22's.
