.22 WMR blooded...

Received a text yesterday from a farmer giving me the location of a sow and pups. Got my chores done and headed up. I knew the ranges would be short so I choose my new Browning T-Bolt in .22WMR with the AA maple stock. Well the intended targets were a "no-show" however this girl choose to walk on the barnyard wall behind me. The Hornady 30 grain V-Max, chrono'ed at 2230 fps, to the beaner made short work of her. As for the others, in my best Arnold voice, "I'll be bach".

On a side, I was leaning up against the steel railing for the cows with the barn roof above me. I was entertained by the swallows constantly and several times thought they wanted to land on my barrel! Beautiful birds...

Excellent! Beautiful rifle too! About oh maybe 15+ years ago, I went back to New York State (Western New York) for a family / friends visit. One of the rifles I took was a Marlin 22WMR bolt rifle. There was this Dairy farm I shot at since I was a kid. The Dairy farmer remembered me and let me shoot. I can tell you that inside 150 yards, the .22WMR is a deadly 'chuck cartridge! I do so miss "chuck hunting! Unfortunately, my friends that still live there say that NO HUNTING posting signs are literally everywhere and 'chuck hunting is all but gone! Terrible! I do envy your ability to still make it to those fields..

Can’t beat a good ol’ .22 Mag for close-range groundhogs. I’ll use an HMR when a little less noise and/or a smaller, frangible bullet is better suited, but those little .17s just don’t get the juices - or memories - flowing like the WMR does. One of my very favorite rifles is a mint Winchester 9422M XTR that I inherited from my late dad. Load it with some CCI Gamepoints and it’s a chuck-killer I prefer over a Hornet under 120 yards or so.

I went to scout a few new fields with a buddy yesterday evening, we dropped two pups and I blooded my Remington 22-250. 55 gr Sierra over Varget. The last field we checked was complex as the shooting backstop was great but homes very close beside and behind. Shots will be 100 to 120 so I believe I'll take Mr. M's track with this one.

I recognize that scope and take full credit for the hole in the chin which translates to a hole in the head...a SNERT!

I too like the WMR for that kind of work, more than a 17HMR on groundhogs. The WMR and those mini vmax type bullets put a thump to them. I once borrowed a Rugar 77 HB stainless and shot 13 chucks out t0 135 yards in one night with it. Only Ruger I ever had that shot well. And he wouldn't sell it to me! I recall using a 33 grain bullet and wow they put mr. whistlepig down past.
