22 WALDOG

Good question

The answer is, all the short range BR shooters had changed all their bolt faces over to accept the PPC, because of course........ it was winning.
Then folks wanted to go back to shooting a 22. Well Dan Dowling did what any good wildcatter would do and shortened a case to approximate the volume of a deuce and called Harrell's and had them shorten a ppc die. Presto chango......... the WalDog was born.
The Harrell's die is a bushing die, so a 6 and a 22 can be used. I am not sure what Harrells charges for shortening a die, but it ain't much and it will be in your hands pretty darn quick.

I am sure I butchered the history a bit. I will try and dig up the real history.
I think the son of the man ( Waldo G Woodside) that the WalDog is named for is a forum member????
I believe Waldo purchased the first rifle of this chambering from Dan?

Thanks. That's exactly what I suspected. I'm the other way around. I have a 223 bolt face, so that is pretty much the tie-breaker.

I'm confused.

The historical information is very interesting. "Designed to approximate the capacity of the 222Remington".

So why not a 222Remington instead of all the custom dies and trouble making brass?

Holding off on a 222 project until I hear a good reason to do the Waldog.
The Waldog is in a league of its own when it comes to pure accuracy. At least mine was. Many, many groups in the low 1's. Good quality brass can be challenging to make no doubt. When my current 6PPC barrel dies it will become a .22 Waldog no doubt. Very little recoil, 3500 fps with a 52 gr Berger, VV133, Fed 205m, and groups in the low 1's. What's not to like! If you can shoot it to it's potential, this round will not let you down.

This might be a silly question but I know someone here will have the correct answer.

I have a 22 WALDOG 'forming' die and a Wilson neck die but I have no FL sizing die. The forming die came with the barrel from an estate sale. So all I know is that it's a Rattigan 22PPC -.100 .243 NK barrel.

I bought a 22 PPC sizing die and I was going to take 0.100" off the bottom and use that as my Waldog sizing die. Looking more closely at the shoulder it looks like I may have jumped the gun.

Can I use a Shortened 22 PPC die as a sizing die for the Waldog (or this Waldog based on the barrel markings)? It looks like the shoulder angle could be slightly different (but I have seen a few different shoulder angles on here and I have no idea what mine is)

A Waldog has a 30* shoulder just like a PPC.
When I first got started with a Waldog, Dan Dowling (Mr Waldog) just called Harrells and order a Waldog die. When it arrived, it was a shortened ppc die with 22 cal bushings.

Worked like a charm.
