22 Talldog

I just turn the necks like I normally do, no issues whatsoever.

Two passes with the turner tool.

I wonder what I was doing wrong. Maybe mine was the .125 short version and not the .100 short. I even tried reaming the step out but that did not work either. If memory serves me, I had about a .005 step in the brass. Bullets would just stop dead when seating. Don't know, many moons ago. Boring worked fine, but was a lot of work. Just my experience with the cartridge.

My WallDog reamer has a 0.253” neck, so I’m not turning thin.

If I recall correctly?
The shoulder that becomes neck is about 0.017-0.022” thick depending on brand and lot.
My PMA cutter set to about 0.013” knocks down the step without issue. Then a final pass to clean it all up with the other cutter.
I usually make up a box (100) at a time on a “indoor day” usually late winter.

I only wish my experience was that easy! Lol. Mine was a .248 neck. I thought the inside reaming would be the easy solution, boy was I wrong! Lol. I wonder if it could have been the lot of brass that I had? Really don't know at this point. Thoughts?

One thing I did do was fireform before neck turning. Made for very nice brass to turn but the step was very pronounced on the inside. No way my mandrel was going through there. Hmmm?

I anneal before and after pushing the shoulder back on my WallDog ang again after turning.

Interesting. Not sure what to think at this point. I wonder if a tapered mandrel in combination with annealing would have pushed the step to the outside. Probably not is my thinking, but not really sure at this point. Hmmm?

For what it’s worth, I toyed with the idea of getting a 22BR - 0.125 short back when 220 Russian was gone a few years ago. To trial it, I took 6 Creedmoor cases and used my 22BR die to push the shoulder down 0.125”, simulating what I would be trying with the 6 BR cases to make my “22 Corgi” as I was going to name it. I could never get the shoulder junction that moved into the neck to feel right when seating bullets. I tried mandreling and then turning - not good enough. I tried reaming and then sizing again and then turning - not good enough. There was always something uneven as it passed through that portion of the neck. And then I decided a new extractor to pull PPC cases and Norma 22 PPC brass was the way to go, haha.

Anyone have a reamer print for the Talldog (22 PPC - 0.100)? I'd like to get a reamer made but can't find an actual reamer print for the dang thing.

I'm currently forming brass with a 22 Waldog forming die set to only push the shoulder back 0.100". I push them back and trim until they chamber in a 22 PPC - .100 chamber. The necks are really long lol I found a Lyman electric trimmer with the 22 PPC bushing (#7 I think) does a great job.

I have to turn my necks to 0.008" just like the 6 PPC brass that I have. The process is a bit of a pain but as was said earlier, a rainy Saturday is a perfect time to bang out 100 or so and start fire forming.

I have a Talldog barrel but I think it was on it's last legs when I purchased it (it has throat erosion and is badly fire cracked) but it got me introduced to the cartridge and I enjoy almost zero recoil and the accuracy even a shot out barrel can yield. I'll be keeping this one as a fireform barrel.
