22 PRS/NRL Muzzle Velocity question

I found a lot of Eley match that shoots quite well out of my rimX. However, average velocity is 1095 fps. For someone new to the PRS and ELR rimfire game, would you look for a lower velocity lot for shots pushing out to 400 yards or would you just run with it?

Mainly, my concern is the transonic range and a loss of accuracy as seen in centerfire bullets at the same transition. Some of the shots are breaking 1100 fps and it was 40 degrees so I imagine they will get hotter as the temps go up.

Thoughts?

Run it.

Bryan Litz has a newer podcast taking about this very thing. Ammo that is near the supersonic threshold and how it acts after it leaves the barrel.

The consensus of the whole thing was it didn’t have any negative consequences if the average was right around or near the speed of sound.

I’ve ran 1100-1125 with a couple lots of ammo and to 350 yards they were quite consistent.

Awesome, thank you for the info!

With regard to transonic turbulence, the concern is problems that may arise when a bullet slows down from higher velocities into the transonic zone.

The transonic zone of bullet "speeds" is about 890 fps - 1340 fps. The vast majority of .22LR ammo spends most of it's flying time within the transonic zone. Transonic turbulence isn't a problem for most .22LR ammo. Rifle and shooter aside, accuracy problems related to .22LR ammo are related to ammo quality, not velocity.

You are way overthinking it. My present ammo of SK Long Range is about 1100fps out of my rifle and shoots great to 500 yards. In my other rifle it's about 1110fps. Again does great. If you ammo shoots good then use it and stop worrying.

Also the transonic loss of accuracy in centerfire comes from the bullet design. Some bullets do not even worry about transonic and some get less accurate.
