6slr range report

I had the same problem with 4831sc. I have been using the Reloader 17 and its doing great. I guess Im just going to have to deal with the temp sensitivity. I shot a .685 5 shot group at 500 yards with 42.3 grains of Reloader 17 and 107 sierra's seated 20 thousandths off the lands.

That is a phenomonal group @ 500 coyotehunter what speed are you getting and what barrel are you using.
I purshased a pound of H1000 this afternoon to try out and hesitated about buying R 17 I thought it might have been a little fast, I wanted some R 22 but the store was out.

It would have been nice to hit the range tomorrow but huricane Irene is headed this way and it might be a little on the damp side tomorrow :( .

The Reloder series are double based powders and will give higher velocity, but are temperature sensitive. The Hodgdon Extreme line of powders are single based and designed to be temp insensitive, I shoot H4831 and H4350 and don't give much thought to the ambient temp., winter, summer, the air density changes give me more vertical trouble than the load.

I have been reading all these posts and am a bit surprised that you are looking to get 3050 from a 107 gr bullet in the SLR.

I shoot the same speeds with a 6mm BRX and it only takes 33.5 gr of Varget to get there. BBL life is excellent with outstanding accuracy.

My thinking was that the SLR was really designed to push a 107 gr bullet to 3150-3250 fps and the 115 gr bullets to 3050 or so. For competition, that is where the ballistic advantage is at.

The bbl life of the SLR can't be all that great ( I am thinking a little over 2000 rds) shooting 43-44 Gr. of powder.

Am using my SLR for 1K NRA HP prone shooting and driving the 115 DTACs right at 3050 with very good accuracy.

No flames or anything, just thinking out loud.

Bob my buddy has a brx he is shooting 105 bergers and is barely getting 3000 fps which is better than my 6br @ 2850 fps.
Right now I am getting close to 3100 fps with the same bullet at 44gr of H4831 but I know the slr will drive them faster but I feel h 4831 is a bit to fast ,I could push it past 44gr but I think the pressures will quickly rise.

H1000 on the other hand will fill the case and keep the pressures lower imo and the speed should increase.

Bob I agree with what you are saying about the brx and less powder and the slr with more being close in speed ,however the brx is maxed out to give those velocities .

When loading my slr with lapua brass which seems to group very well and will handle more pressure than ww or rem brass I am sure I could peak the pressures and get some really fast speeds out of it, but I would rather keep the pressures normal and maybe get 150 fps over the brx .

I realize barrel life will decrease using hot loads and would rather use slower burning powders even if I have to put more .

The one thing I want is to be able to have a consistent load over 3150 with normal pressures and the slr seems to be able to do that.

looking for pressure as above has been difficult with trued actions. so I switch to looking at the case diamiter at the web body presure ring, if you take a fired case, dial mike/or caliper and work slowly back the body you will find a pressure ring just at the body/web junction.

sized case to fired case in a custom chamber with minimal body sizing required if find .0005/6" to be in a near max pressure zone, if it goes to .0007-.0001" the load is max in my experience.

Typical for 06 cases is .4695 sized and .4700 fired in my 280 AI, 7-08Ai, and 22.250 with loads that shoot well and show no sign if max pressure on bolt lift.

Bob3700, or any other 6SLR shooters...
for your 1K NRA HP 6SLR, what length, twist barrel are you using for the 115 DTACs? How many grains of Varget? Have you tried the Berger 115 VLDs?

In the SLR, Varget is WAY too fast of a powder. I am using Varget in a 6mm BRX.

In the SLR, I have been shooting the 115 DTAC bullet. It is an excellent performer at 1K distances. The 115 Berger was way too sensitive to seating depth and I didn't want to waste bbl trying to find "The Load" when the DTAC was so forgiving. The difference in BC between the two is not worth mentioning.

Have been using H4831sc for the DTAC in the SLR. It performs very well at 3050 fps with moderate pressures.

Thanks Bob.
I'm shooting a 6XC for everything up to 600yd. right now. I'm using H4350 & 107 SMKs.
I want to try shooting 1000yd in the near future, so I'm trying to learn about the 6SLR and the 6CM. I appreciate the knowledge shared by all the much more experienced shooters that post here.

Zip ( hope thats not your real name? )

I have a 6 Super X ( SLR) it has a 30" Bartlein 1:8 twist. I shoot 115 Bergers out of it soft seated into the lands. Like was mentioned I have not used Varget as it is a little on the fast side for this case. I have used R19, R22, N560, and H1000 with success. Its been a little while since I have had this barrel on the gun but I would be intrested and would try Hodgdons new Super Performance in it to see how it faired.

Yes this is a NRA prone rifle.
