22 PPC powder recommendation

So last year I HAD 4 pounds of Benchmark, circa 2009. Used a bunch up loading 222 for PD when I had bright idea to try it with my 22PPC and 52 grain Bergers. WOWZA. Gun shot so much better than me I actually could start understanding wind, mirage etc, in a real way, on the target at 100. I mean that gun shoots! I would put the dot on the ball, pull trigger and the hole would appear right where I was aiming...not nearby. I mean it was like using a mouse...point and click. Pure luck load development....first try and it was scary good. Better than any rifle I ever shot.

And I ran out of that Benchmark. So...i was going to load up 100 with a new pound of BM I bought, but sumthing in my pea brain said...try a few first. So I loaded 10. I had 20 left from the old powder.

Went to the range today. you guessed it. two groups in the half inch mark with the new powder. Old powder, one group in the high 1's. Easy as pie. (well lucky as pie, but you get it).

DAAAAMIIIT!!!!!! Why did I load 1200 PD rounds in 222 with that precious powder?????!!!!!!

So the search begins for a new powder. Any 22 PPC shooters???? What should I try? I know BM isn't on the top of the list as go to...what is?

N130 works like the benchmark should. 2015br, xmr8208 work too. H322 would be good. You must have had the only can of benchmark that ever shot. You may can tweak your new can a bit and get it closer if you took velocity readings of your old one

I would try 8208 in the 22PPC.

Accurate 2230 is my favorite for 22 ppc. 28 grains with 50 gr v-max run close to 3700 fps and makes good burger !!

I got my best groups with a .22 PPC Wichita Classic using W-748. Averaging about .39".

Vihta Vouri N-133 worked great in my 22PPC, with 40Gr. & 50Gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. Factory bullets that would shoot in the high 1's to low 2's.
Deadly to 600 yds. on Pd's.

for shooting p. dogs, I shot WC 844 which is a version of 335 with 50-55g bullets, fast and extremely accurate.

T32 and H322 were excellent but put way more fouling in the barrel.

Viht N-133 with a 53gr VMAX (25.9gr) - 12 twist barrel in my 22 PPC. This my hardest hitting prairie dog rifle at ranges out to 600 yards. JCM24M

Don't know current price but Vit and Norma powders were expensive.

Been a long while since I had a 22 PPC that Mike Bryant built for me. I mostly used Benchmark powder but also did well with W-748 after reading an article in Precision Shooting magazine. The writer was from Georgia and told the story of buying his 22 PPC and asking the seller for load suggestions. He mentioned Benchmark, H-322, etc but told him not to waste his time on W-748. After having no satisfaction with several powders, an old timer suggested he try W-748. He did so and the rifle came to life. When he told the old timer about his success with W-748 after the seller told him to avoid it, the man said, "Son, you'll learn soon enough. If a guns shoots rat turds, feed it rat turds!"

I never forgot that. Good luck with your 22 PPC. Sweet round.

Why not at least try some charge weights above and below where the old benchmark load is. At least +/- .5 grains in 0.2 grain increments before giving up on it entirely.

Vihta Vouri N-133 and H-322 have worked very well in my 22PPC and 22PPC Short varieties with 52gr. match bullets.

A popular powder back in the 22 PPC's heyday seems to have been IMR 4198.

Just out of curiosity, did you try changing charge or primers on the new BM to see if that would bring it to life?? WD
