.22 PPC & 90gr Accuracy Question

Hello All -

My game is a little different then yours - I shoot a pistol, modified XP-100 with a 15" barrel built by Clay Spencer) chambered in .22 PPC - and have to knock down steel silhouettes at 50, 100, 150 and 200M. The 200M ram is 55 pounds of steel. Bottom line, it takes some force. .22 PPC will *usually* do the trick, which I shoot because of the accuracy at these distances and the very mild recoil. Accuracy becomes an issue in the shoot-offs, when MUCH smaller targets are placed at the 200M line to determine a winner.

Now to my question... I am having the pistol re-barreled and am considering a 1:6.5 twist to stabilize the new Sierra Match King 90gr bullets. I would love to hear some input regarding these bullets and if this heavy round comes at an accuracy price. I know the 22 PPC is considered deadly accurate, but most of these opinions are from shooters hitting paper with MUCH lighter projectiles. So is it reasonable to expect to be able to maintain the same accuracy, given some testing in loads, with the heavier 90gr bullet?

Thanks!

Since you are rebarreling, why not consider the 6PPC in a 12 or 10 twist, and shoot something in the 95 to 100 grain weight? I bet the accuracy will still be there plus the weight you are looking for. PLENTY of great 6MM bullets!

The 90's do shoot i have a 300 yard group shot out of a 7 twist barrel 30" lond .320 high and .865 wide for 5 shots shot F Class style off the ground on a mat and Benchrest and sand bag. go with a 6 to 6.5 twist the faster the better at your velocity and you will be good to go it should give you batter energy and dwell time on the target but if you want the ultimate step up to a 7 twist 6mm and shoot from 55 to 107gr projectiles in a 6mmBR or 6PPC.

Over the past 10 years of IHMSA competion I have used the "itty-bitty" guns with good results. AKA .224 bullets 80. and 90 grains on big and little silhouette targets. The 80 SMK and 90 JLK worked great bit when I tried the new 90 SMK's in a well used Pac-Nor barrel with a one in six twist the bullets blew appart!!!

The current barrel is chambered in 22 Dasher, I call it the 2x6, it still puts moly 80's where you point them and in an after match test still blew up the 90 SMK"s.

Had a talk with Rich from Sierra about this in Iowa last weekend. He said it was a problem with the base of the jackets and that Sierra was correcting the problem.
The funny thing is I have shot them out of a 223 WSSM at 3400 fps in an 8 twist and never blew any....but have 2 freinds that shoot 22 BRs with a 7 twist and have blown some up...

FWIW I have shot 71 of the Sierra 90gr MK out of my .22BR, with a 6.5" twist Satern barrel, and every one of the bullets have made it to the target with no problems. I will be testing the JLK, and Berger, 90gr. bullets in the near future.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine
