22 Nosler in a bolt rifle

I've got the correct bolt face in a single shot BR rifle so I'm debating within on doing 22N vs 223AI.

I'll have either one throated out far for the 80's on up to the new 95SMK and will do a 6.5 twist heavy and long barrel.

Anybody done a 22N similar to what I have in mind? I know the cartridge doesn't have the strongest brass and rims tend to get torn up using the AR platform but with bullets seated way out in a single shot I'd think one could get enough extra fps to make it worthwhile over 223AI, yes or no???

Have at it. Thinkin' the AR guys ripping off rims need to fine tune their gas system.

Nosler’s latest 22 Cal. RDF bullet is an 85gr. HPBT, G1 BC .498, G7 .245, and with an OAL length of 1.135”.

22 Nosler with a COAL of 2.260”, there’ll be .390” of this bullet seated below the neck/shoulder junction.

Add all of the bullet’s length that’s seated below the neck-shoulder junction to COAL, assuming enough freebore and leade length to do so prior to incurring hard jam, and the Nosler’s COAL is now 2.650”.

The space previously occupied by a protruding bullet base can now be stuffed full of additional velocity making gun powder all the while adding little if any over its previous ‘seated to mag length’ pressure.

I have a bolt gun in 223AI and gave some thought to a re-do in 22 Nosler. Several on here convinced me that it was not the way to go. Well, I will blame it on the wisdom of the crowd but it was actually just realizing my 223 Ackley is too dang accurate to mess with.

Yeah, I know I can buy Lapua 223 match brass and it will handle extra pressure well, AI it and get very good fps with a long barrel.

If 22N didn't have the same case head size as 223 I wouldn't consider it, but I'm curious what the results would be.

Might have to take one for the team and try 22N anyway.

Thinking the 22N has a case volume similar to the 22BR????

That will give you a great idea of performance potential.

Interesting cartridge.
