22 nosler bolt gun

So loads for this caliber are maxed out at 55,000 lbs of pressure for ar 15. I’m getting 3550 ft/sec out of a 223 ai bolt gun with a 50 gr bullet . Was hoping I could beat that speed with the 22 nosler in a bolt gun but can’t find any load data for bolt action guns. Anybody got any info ?

I have a bolt mini howa in 22 nosler, built mine for the heavy side of bullet selection.
Lightest bullet I've shot is 69grn using ARcomp.
But mine was throated longer for the 77's .
Even in a bolt gun the brass can't take pressure.

I've heard the 22 Nosler brass is far from good. So disappointing because the 20 Nosler they were supposed to come out with but have yet to do so looked like it could be a really fun cartridge to run in an AR build with the Berger 55's. Even their 22 Nosler would make for a fun AR build but not if brass sucks.

Do they start losing primer pockets right away or is the brass just crappy all the way around??

Thank y’all for the input! I’ve heard the same things about the 22 grendel brass. I’ve also heard the 22 Valkyrie brass is very good for high pressure loads in a bolt gun. Any thoughts on that?

A bit of a tangent. But, how can 22 Nosler produce higher muzzle velocities than 223 Rem [with, say a Wylde chamber] with a lower max pressure?

I've built 2 bolt guns for the Valkyrie. One is a Remington 700 the other is a Savage target action. Both with Criterion Barrels. They shoot very, very good. The only downside is they are both 1:7 twist. Neither of them shoot the 90 grain bullets very well. They are 1/4" at 100 with Berger's 80.5 Full Bore bullets, however. I was plinking Prairie Dog s this past spring at 800 yds without much trouble.

I've also built a few Valkyries AR's. They are close too, but not as accurate as the bolt guns. Barrel length and overall weight I think is the difference. Same twist as the bolt guns. 6.5 barrels are on the way for some 90 grain bullet testing.

As far as primer pockets go, they seem to hold up just fine with either Hornady, Federal or Starline brass.

I'm not a speed guy, but I have taken the loads to max pressure and found no real problems other than accuracy.

You may want to check out Ultimate Reloader on YouTube. Gavin does a bunch of testing of the Valkyrie in bolt and AR configurations.

I once considered building a 22 Nosler bolt gun but, as the round was in its infancy then, when I asked around for experiences I was told forget it and go Valkyrie instead. Why? The brass in 22 Nosler will not hold up to hotrod loads at bolt gun pressure. The Valkyrie is much better case design and can standup to the higher pressures. Things change faster than I change underwear in PRS shooting but, for a while at least, there were several of those shooters putting the Val into play.

I will tell it like it is.
The brass will start to smear on the bolt face even with nosler load data.
I have made my brass last a little longer using leverevolution, but" can't pass 3075fps. Or brass goes to doo doo!. And at this point my project rifle has been a total let down.
My purpose for this rigg was to push the 77 SMK's at a higher node than the 223 can..
And well".. unable to do that.
Will not lose primer pockets, just thins out at the base too soft of brass seems to me.

Ok here is where I’m coming from. I’m a 22 250 expert , been shooting them since 1985. I recently started playing with the 223 ai with 50 grain bullets and got amazing results using high capacity 5.56 brass. My 22 250 bucks enough to move my head so I can’t spot myself on a prairie dog. The 223 ai doesn’t. So I’m looking to shoot a left handed bolt gun right handed with the fastest speed and never take my eye off the scope. Been shooting left handed on right handed bolt guns and it works but my left eye not as good as my right. I have 22 250’s that are awesome but after 250 shots my shoulder is raw. But my 223 ai gun are much less pounding. So I’m looking to build the ultimate pd gun. My ar 10 22 250 does great and my 223ai does great while it’s cooling I guess I’m be gready but I want the ultimate pd gun!

Also I have found that speed is the answer to wind out to 400 yds. Which is 90% of my shooting on pd’s. Time of flight is key.

What caliber are you speaking of?
