22 magnum cartridge adaptor

Any of you guys ever use one of these things??..stick a 22 mag rimfire into one of these & you can shoot it in 223 or 22-250 depending on the one u buy...It is 25 dollars sent here from alaska...I'm thinking I'd like to try some reduced loads in my new 22-250 barrel..Really cant decide if I should load some reduced loads or go with one of these cartridge adaptors...This new 22 250 barrel seems pretty tight..I'm not sure but I think the 22mag is smaller in diameter than .224...mike in ct

Cartridge adapters have been around ever since metallic cartridges first made an appearance. Years ago the average shooter couldn't afford but one rifle and the basic tools to reload for it were out of the financial reach of most working stiffs. The adaptors were a way for him to shoot smaller or sub caliber cartrdiges. For things like practice or bird or rat shooting they were ideal and outfits like Marbles made them for just about every big game cartridge in existance. The military used them for practice. I have several different types in my cartridge collection.

To be honest, they weren't too accurate beyond rat shooting range and most of the sub caliber cartridges used were pretty pathetic ballistically. Today they are mostly a gimmick because it's a rare shooter who can't afford a 22 rifle in addition to his regular hunting rifle. But maybe you're one of those guys.

The 22 WMRF does shoot a smaller diameter bullet and don't forget that WMRF ammo is not cheap. But, if you think you'll get $25 worth of enjoyment out of it, go for it. Besides, all those shooters in Alaska are good guys and they sure could use the money.;)

Right now I dont own a 22 of either rimfire ...Tell you the truth the adaptor & 8.99 for a box of 22mag...I can load alot of reduced loads..infact I can buy some 223 diameter hornet bullets to see if that barrel is on the tight side...The extremely tight patch when cleaning & I blew out a primer with a load I knew to be safe in another gun...Just had me thinking...What I should do is attempt to slug that bore..Not something I look forward to..mike in ct

I checked the dia. of a lot of the various .22 rimfire rounds that I play with. From what I measured, most everything from the .22 BB cap to the .22 LR measured out real close to .222" dia., and the .22WRF and .22 Magnum used .224" dia. bullets. The .22WRF and .22 Magnum should work well in your .224" dia. barrel from your rifle. I have seen mixed results from a lot of my friends that have used these adapters. It would just depend on what you are expecting from the use of the adapter ultimately.

I bought a box of 45 gr hornet bullets 223 diameter I loaded up a box with 8 .1 grs of Unique pistol powder...If the rain holds off today I'll update with some range results..The other reason I wanted to use a less powerful load in that gun was for my nephews... they have never fired a rifle before..That 22-250 with a muzzle brake has some fierce bark to it...After a bit of thinking I forgot I own a little 222 rem varmint..Dope I am ...Should just use that to start them off...They have been watching with keen interest the progress I have made doing that two barrel rifle project for them...unclemikect
