22 Hornet

I kind of been thinking about a 22 Hornet..Hand loader...to play with and shoot small critters..and tree squirrels. Maybe a 77/22
I think it can be down loaded and be accurate for tree squirrels . right?
Some one said get a 22 Squirrel barrel for the 77/22 I don't know . Big expense in dies I say why not just use the hornet...I wonder how it shoots with Blue Dot. I have used blue dot for reduced rifle loads and found it to be extremely accurate.
anyone with experience with the 22 Hornet.
Pick up one of those little Handi Rifles in 22 Hornet, a tin of 22 pellets and some small rifle primers. Crimp ever so lightly and you are good to go without waking the neighbors

I won a m77/22 hornet. It's a very pretty rifle. Just doesn't shoot all that great. 2 moa at best, 10 shot groups@ 100 yards. I did get a fox squirrel head shot, and those varmagedon bullets are awesome. I like my ruger, but I would not recommend buying one.

I owned a 22 hornet in a ruger 77/22 and it didn't shoot very well at all. I shimmed the bolt and worked up some reloads and got it to shoot reasonably well but never great. It liked H110 and 35gr Hornady Vmax bullets. I loved shooting chucks with it out to about 150yds it was deadly. The vmax bullets are very explosive, like on twigs it would explode! It was devastating of Pdogs! If two were standing close to each other it would kill both when I shot one! Would love to have a Hornet In a Cooper or any rifle that would shoot well, it would be awesome in Pdog land!

That's where I got my bolt shims and they helped a lot. I sold my Ruger, not because I didn't like the way it shot but I would just like to find a used Cooper or custom in Hornet or K hornet.

I've got an Anschutz 1733 that I bought just before Anschutz discontinued the hornet. It is beautifully built and shoots legit 1/2" @ 100.

Lil' gun, pistol primers, and whatever bullets it likes.

I have a Savage 342D that I traded for 25 yrs ago , Found some cast lead bullets and loaded them down with Unique .Was deadly on squirrels. Have a Ruger 77/22 in the 22 hornet and just picked up a 17 Ackely hornet in a Ruger .. has a nice little pop to it ,, haven't done any load work for it yet .

I acquired a savage model 40 that had a headspace issue and was seperating case heads every other shot before I decided to get to the bottom of the problem.

Savage advised they no longer made or serviced the model 40 and recommended I get the parts I needed from ahlman's. When asked what parts I should get they didn't respond. Now that is service!!

I headspaced it once I found there was no warranty and it shoots well. The ring extractor spring is/was too strong and the right extractor hook was riding the case but isn't now.

Probably won't be buying anything savage again as ya get what ya pay for I guess. Been thinking a Hepburn or a Cooper my be the way to go...

Word. The 77/22 in a Hornet is hit n miss.. Some shoot well, most don't. Yes I have one. Shot all over the paper.. Sent it to Randy in Connecticut and $200 later it shoots rather well. There are many powders that do well in the Hornet but most people I know are using Lil Gun. Close to max. I load 40 grain Vmax. It's a fun round and cheap to shoot.
Mine shot 3" groups when I first got it. It has a 2 piece bolt and its sloppy. A few years ago I bought some shims that fit in between the bolt halves and man this thing shoots now!! I've been using H-110 and getting groups under .5" at 100. Testing now with N-105 and the 35 gr NTX. No data so working up slow. Very promising so far. Next range test tomorrow.
