22 Hornet prime recommendations wanted

On another note. (I am having trouble decaping the factory brass) tough to get out. Like its crimped. Bent a few redding decaping stems in the process. (I have spares now.) Like working on a watch. Small and delicate brass. Havent gotten to triming and sizing.)

I think it's Hornady brass that has the small primer flash holes. I ended up grinding my de-capping pin down to a finer point so they would quit getting stuck in the flash hole.

You can get small deprime pins for some dies; check with the manufacturer. Redding also makes deprime dies with the small pins. You posted that you have gotten some 7 1/2 primers; those are NOT for the Hornet - way too hard of a cup. They would be good for your AR, though. The 6 1/2 & other primers mentioned in these posts would be good to go. One other good primer for Hornets is the Wolf/Tula Standard SR primer, which is copper colored. Hornets can be fun, or frustrating sometimes. I have 3 K-Hornets & one regular Hornet, but haven't shot them much in the last 3 years. Need to get back to that. Another good powder for the Hornet is Alliant 300MP, though it is hard to find since the 300BLK crowd got onto it, just like AA1680. Have fun, Joe

The issue with pistol primers would be pocket depth. The small pistol primers are not as tall as small rifle primers. If seated to the nominal .005" below the case head plane they will not be touching the bottom of the primer pocket. If they are at the bottom they may be too deep for a definitive firing pin strike.
I started with Fed.205Ms/11.5 gr. H110 in an 1893 Low Wall/Douglas XX barrel. They seemed a tad hot so switched to the Rem. 61/2 (as they are designed for the Hornet specifically) with the same powder charge with great results.

I started out using pistol primers and when I tried remington 7 1/2's I got my best groups...so I have stayed with the
remington 7 1/2 small rifle primers with no issues in my 22 hornet. My model 25 will shoot 3/4 inch groups at a hundred yards
very consistent so far. With this kind of groups I have been having some fun nailing prairie rats at over 200 yards at times. ;D
What I like about the hornet is that I can just throw it over the hood of truck or up against a fence post...standing, kneeling or
whatever and blow up the prairie rats at the shorter distances and laugh out loud sometimes when they go flying 4 to 5 feet in
the air when hit with a little 35 grain v-max. ;D I had a 22 mag and traded for the hornet as I enjoy reloading and the guy I traded
with did not reload and did not want to pay the high prices for loaded 22 hornet ammo. This little hornet is now one of my favorites.

Yes I have the small pins. Sometimes they bend, the resistance is so much. I am going to look at the primer pockets in the S&B brass to see if there is a crimp. Could also be the pin doesnt line up with the primer hole exactly. As hard to extract the primer as a 5.56!

Correction, I have 6 1/2 primers. I will also look for some Wolf/Tula, thanks for that suggestion.

CZ 527 Lux .22 Hornet

Neck sized only brass, I have used Remington, Winchester, Prvi Partizan, S&B. And a wide variety of 1940s-1960s vintage fired brass my father left me a coffee can full of, which is working still.

Newer Remington seems to hold just a bit more Lil' Gun, but all work OK.

Sorted by brand and trimmed to 1.395" after the first firing/neck size. The brass pretty much lasts until it is lost, much of it has over 5 loadings. Some day, it may need neck anneal- But none is cracking yet, except 1 batch of Remington from cartridges which the factory apparently randomly forgot to anneal. THOSE had some cracked necks as new rounds, right out of the box.

CCI small pistol primers, 10 gr of W296 or H110 and a Winchester 46 gr HP "Hornet" bullet. Around 2,650 fps.

Or same primer & bullet, but with 13 gr Lil' Gun, around 2950 fps.

Cast bullet: Lyman 225415
with RL7.

The max pressure for a Hornet is 43,000 psi plus according to QuickLoad.

The above posted loads are at or above 43,000 psi.

Not sure a pistol primer is the way to go with this much pressure.
