22 Hornet bullets

I want to get into reloading 22 Hornet. What is the best shape and weight for distance ( maybe 200 yds).

Dont think I ever took mine out that far. It very accurate out to 100 and has killed its share of ground hogs. I use the Hornady 35 gr NTX @ 3000 fps. I neck size only with Lee collet die. Mine is a Ruger 77/22. YMMV

Lil' Gun and Hornady 35Vmax's have worked well in my old Model 70. Very accurate. I like the 40 VMax but I have to load 'em up pretty short due to the short magazine in the 70. Still they shoot well.

The Sierra 45's work as well but they're little stubby RN shape.

If your rifle allows longer COAL, I think the 40 VMax has the best potential for long'ish range with the mighty Hornet.

I load them all with Lil' Gun.

All good advice above. But darn sure know what your twist is should be #1.
Traded my beautiful model 40 Savage for a CZ 527 thinking I was moving up. The Savage is a 1-14” twist and the CZ was a 1-16”. Luckily enough I got my Savage back.
CZ may have changed as I see folks using a 40 grain standard bullet. The little Hornet style bullets leave a fair bit to be desired at longer distances.

I have great results with Lil gun.

I have loaded quite a few Dogtown 34gr HP's, over WW296 and 2400. They work pretty well on ground squirrels around here. I am shooting a CZ527.

Hornady still has a 45 grain flat base spire point on their list, one load they show in their 3rd edition that I used years ago is Win 296, start load 8.7 grain, max at 12.4 grain, they list 2,900 FPS.

The 35 grain NTX according to Hornady works from 2200 to 4,400 FPS lead free. https://www.hornady.com/bullets/ntx#!/

I load a 50gr VMax over LilGun at around 2700. It just smokes coyotes! The 40 and 45gr Sierra Hornet bullets also work great.

I use 10 grains of IMR 2400, Remington 6 1/2 primers and 34 gr dogtown HPs from midway. It is a reasonable load but I don't try to stretch it. I would just get something else if the shot was over 125 yrds.
If you don't expect more from your gun than it's designed for it will work for you and is pretty easy on cases. I have tried LilGun and H110 I just simply don't like either. Gary

13.0 gr Lil-Gun, 40gr V-Vax, Remington case, CCI SPP, not compressed, hand-fed in Winchester 1885 Highwall reproduction - 3021fps. I should mention this is fired in a 26" #3 full-octagon barrel.

35 grain V Max. 13.0 gr of LIL' GUN. Savage model 25T. Shoots well. Ground hog kill out to 215. Coyote kill out to 189. I prefer a little more on the coyote but it was what I had and it did the job that day.

I have an old Anschutz that has a .223" bore and it's a rear lug gun. This combo demands caution when loading high end loads. I believe the CZ and the Browning are the only magazine fed guns with front lugs. Another thing is many rifles have a 16 twist and will not stabilize 40 grain boat tail bullets. Good luck and happy shooting, the Hornet is a great little round.

I used to have a Contender carbine with a stainless 16" barrel... my normal shooting range only goes to 100 yds, but on one occasion I went to a range that had one target out at 200. I shot a group of about 1 1/4", or 1 1/2", 5 shots.... pretty sure it was the 40 gr VMax bullet. I'd have to check my records.
The V Max will give you probably the best accuracy in this cartridge.... at least in my experience.

For those of you wanting to make your 527 CZ hornet into a K-Hornet, I have the reamer. Will sell it for $100 or rent it out for $25.
