22 Hornet Brass: Winchester/Remington

My experience with reloading the Hornet only includes Winchester brass. How does Remington compare to Winchester in .22 Hornet? Quality comparisons are fine, I am also interested in physical qualities compared between the two such as case capacity and other things of that nature.

Thanks,

Danny

Actually, Privi Partizan 22 Hornet brass is really good. I actually like it better than Remington or Winchester. Comes fully annealed from the factory, easier to find, and a cheaper price point to boot.

I actually tried annealing a few new PPU pieces along with some Winchester brass that needed it. Winchester came out fine, but I turned the PPU neck to mush when I tried to reduce the neck size to 20 cal. The second annealing was too much being that the factory already did it completely and correctly.

We can echo Ledd Slinger's views on the Privi Partizan brass. Was looking for some factory ammo to feed my hornet and fireform in my K-Hornet and blundered into it at a gun show. Fine brass, and has been easier to find than other brands of Hornet brass or ammo for some time. When possible, I get it by choice now.

Remington .22 Hornet brass has had a slight edge in case capacity v. the Winchester. If I recall correctly, Remington cases would hold ~.1 - .2 grains more than the Winchester. I'm not sure about recent production, though, as both have been hard to find for some time.

With regard to PRVI brass, I encountered a batch that was not sufficiently annealed and/or brittle. I lost about 25% (split cases) of the first 40 when fire forming to .22 K Hornet. I annealed the rest of the bag and the failure rate dropped to zero. Other than that, I've had good experience with PRVI Hornet brass, too.

Was that PPU brass an older batch? I bought 500 new PPU brass from Cabelas (on sale) about 5 or 6 months ago and the annealing on them was done really well. Actually surprised me to tell you the truth. Didnt expect that on brass that cost me around $22 per 100 (sale price).

Used many for load testing. Necked down to 20 cal, then fire formed into a 20 Ackley Hornet. No issues with any of them.

I can't speak for older productions of PPU brass or any other cartridge in that brand as the 22 Hornet brass is my first experience wit PPU. Very pleased so far.

Yes, it was an older batch, purchased at least 5 years ago. I still have an unopened bag of 100 from that lot and there are no visible signs of annealing. I didn't think much of it at the time as it is not uncommon for component manufacturers to polish after annealing. These guys did NOT want to become K Hornet cases without being annealed. Since then, no problem at all with PRVI brass.

In fact, I find it to be quite durable as Hornet brass goes. I have quite a few that have been through 8 cycles.

I run Remington in my .17 Ackley Hornet. 5 reloads and still going strong. I do anneal after every firing. I bought 100 RWS to try but this darn Remington won't wear out! Guess there are worse problems ☺️
