.22 hornet action?

I used a Ruger, went K hornet, and the 40g speer spire points could be used in the magazine and still touch the lands....great accuracy going this route.

If you are going custom, then consider a reamer with zero freebore with 1 1/2 degree leade angle.

Another way to skin a cat. Load the std 223 with 12g of Blue Dot, 40g bullets, 3000 fps, same thing as a K hornet, and a lot less headache. I suggest a zero freebore reamer.

I do not like three piece stocks for anything, been there done that on half a dozen rifles.

I have a Ruger 22 Hornet. Wish I woulda used a CZ. Ruger has a two piece bolt that has to be shimmed correctly or accuracy is crap. A few come correct, most don't. I ended up sending mine to Randy at Connecticut Precision for the $200 fix. The Ruger feels nice in the hand and is nice to look at. Mine shoots well now, after the work.

These are the only two I knew of before going custom..

Is the CZ a good action and trigger set up?
Yes the 527 has the single set adjustable trigger, and mini mauser action, and recessed crown. FWIW I have two CZ 527's in 222 Rem and 17 Hornet. Unfortunately the 527 series has been discontinued. It has been replaced with the 600. Unfortunately again I donot see the 600 offered in 22 Hornet .

CZ 527 with set trigger perfect but hard to find. CZ is a front lug action where Ruger and Savage are rear lug actions. Another is Sako Rhimaki also a front lug and of course Browning Xbolt, also a front lug action. Stay away from rear lug actions if you're doing a custom, my opinion.

Another vote for front lug action. Other than what has been said, there is Cooper also. You might give Calhoon a call about the CZ since he has done a ton of them. He does nice work and is a lot of fun to talk to, in addition.

Over the years I have seen a couple Bats in Hornets. Give them a call and see if you can get bolt face.

If you are looking to do a 17 or 20 Mink start with a single shot off a Contender action. That’s what I did. I did a 17 Squirrel then a 20 Mink. A “TON” of work goes into making the brass but man are they fun and cheap to shoot. I lucked out and not after 2 months of having my Bullberry 20 Mink Barrel in my hands I found a Cooper 38 that was turned into a 20 Mink. I bought it with zero questions asked. Best damn rifle I’ve ever bought. Once you build a Mink you’ll sell off every other varmint rifle……well not really but you get my point.

I havent looked at cooper yet. That was on my mind.

If you can find a Coop, yes it's the best. Good luck! Good suggestions Adam! This guy is Mink expert, he's been doing it a long time. And I would suggest 20 over 17.

Hmmm. I've got a Sako Vixen in 222, my load is H4198 and 40 Vmax. What's the advantage to reducing velocity with Blue Dot vs a typical rifle powder, just a lot less powder consumed?

Start at 10g of Blue dot with the 40g. First, thing is weigh every charge, the big flake powder is prone to bridge in a powder measure. Accuracy will be great as you work your way up.

Advantage is less powder, which means it is very difficult to ever shoot out a barrel, less fouling, and somewhat quieter.

Very effective reduced velocity load. Accuracy load with Blue dot will be 2600-3000 with the 40's.

I have had a flock of 22 Hornets, and one custom K hornet. 221 Fire Ball, 222, 223 would have saved me a LOT of money chasing accuracy in the 22 Hornet with Hornet velocity easily attained with Blue Dot powder with better accuracy.

The most accurate Hornet I ever had was a Ruger #3, Win 296 with a 50g Nosler ballistic tip. My favorite was a Ruger with a Pac Nor barrel chambered in 22 K Hornet. This rifle ended up being a major coyote thumper with 40g Speer spire points where I could touch the lands at Magazine length.

22 Hornet brass is all but impossible to find, look before you leap. If you are starting from scratch and want a light, handy rifle, consider the CZ 223, and load Blue Dot to Hornet velocities. I worked up a load with Blue dot in the 223 sporter where the 55g sierra was only doing 2500 at the muzzle with Blue Dot, and shot 3/8" at 100 yards, my bob cat and fox load.

If I were to go down the Hornet road again, it would be a 20 Ackley Hornet, hands down, twisted for 40g bullets for use on coyotes. I had a number of 17 Ackley Hornets, not a bad one in the bunch.

My love affair with 22 Hornets was on par to a Love Affair with a very Irrational, Bi Polar Red headed/Blue Eyed girl friend, that simply could not be "fixed".
