22 grendel, 224 grendel, 22 lbc

I have an upper being built by bart at baldwin gun works chambered in 22 grendel, will be a 22" with a +2" gas set up. Looking to run the 75 eld at 3150 to 3200 or the 80 eld at around 3100. I plan to use the hornady 6.5 grendel brass necked down with redding bushing s type dies using a few sizes of bushing to get me there. So far i have ran my fired 6.5 grendel brass down in 2 steps, but i get about 70% success rate, need 3 steps.

Powders like xbr, cfe from what i have seen are doing well.

Any of you guys playing with this combo? Or similar? Wanted to get a thread going as i think this round will be a great round with the high bc bullets of the .224 cal

I'm puzzled. How can it be a 22 Grendel and use a reformed 6.5 Creedmoor case? The Grendel case has 0.441" rim and web diameters being based on the 7.62X39 / 220 Russian; the Creedmoor uses the larger 0.473" O/D case as per the 7.9 Mauser / 30-06 / 308 etc family.

Was that a typo - ie Hornady 6.5 Grendel base case, not Creedmoor? (These Creedmoors keep escaping and turning up everywhere! :) )

Calib, 3 steps is what most use. 270,260,250. CFE gives the best velocity with both of those. Reloder 17 too. But as was stated earlier, be cautious.
Bart Baldwin does excellent work. I have 2 ar15 barrels from him. They shoot well

Not sure how old this data is, but would be nice to have more info with newer powders.

Have been reading lits, watching posts, will be doing a bunch of pressure strings to see what powders run well. Obviously some have been mentioned to help narrow it down

Be careful with those loads. I've found them to be very optimistic. Start low!

I love my 6mmAR!

I have a Howa Mini I barreled to 22 LBC. Easiest (and reasonably priced) method of forming brass was to pick up Hornady 6ppc and 22ppc sizer dies. Produced better results than the Redding bushing die for the 6.5 Grendel IMO.

I havent seen one of those howa rifle in hand, but may check into them

Created this Cartridge in Quickload and CFE 223 is really great powder for this case. Lots of Velocity and lower pressure.
With that being said I have had great luck with CFE and Varget. Also did a Quick test with Reloader 16 that showed some promise but am now sidelined by Sub Zero weather. I don't think you could get enough R16 in the case to over pressure this little fella.
With that being said I don't know how these powders will perform in a Gas gun where you have to have enough port pressure to operate the bolt, or not to much for that matter as mine is in a Howa Mini Bolt Action So keep that in mind.

Also want to note I am using Norma 22PPC and not Grendel brass. Not sure what the difference in internal Volume is between the two.

Got my 22 grendel up and running. Went over 2950 so far with 75 eld on virgin brass. Will be loading more soon and going hotter

Are you after just hot loads or are you also interested in the best accuracy ? Accuracy trumps FPS more often than not.

Been out shooting a little bit, using the cfe223 rite now with 75 eld, may try some 69 tmk and see how they do also. I have been shooting about 3/4 -1" at 100 and feel it should be just a bit better than that. Will load up a bunch more and see what i get with lengths. Noticed today a suppressor makes a difference in harmonics for sure.

What case capacity did you use in Quickload?

Thanks, I have a 24" 6.5 twist barrel coming.
My necked down brass (Hornady 6.5 Grendel ) is showing 34.25 gr before firing.
Think it will stretch a little?
