22 Creedmoor questions

I'm pondering a new rifle in 22 Creedmoor...

I want to use 75 gr - 80 gr bullets.

What twist do I need 1-7" or 1-8" ?

What feebore do I want on the reamer?

All help and info appreciated!
Bob

1/8 twist for those. .081 fb is saami and it works really well for me. I send 75eldms out a 26” barrel at 3600fps with RL-26. It’s quite impressive

Berger 80.5 Fullbore target for everything. I used a 1:8 at 3500 ft.

Mine was a 22x47. Lots of my buds shoot the Creedmoor with a 1:8 and the same bullet. It’ll shoot sub .250 if you get the seating depth right, and it’s hell on critters.

1-8” will get ya the 80.5 Bergers

Cousin has this set up, and loves it !!!
Brother has 1-7.7” on his 22X47L shoots the same bullets

Both have loads for the 52gr Barts… at laser speeds & accuracy

I run a 7.5" Bartlein on my 22 Creed. Works well with Berger 80.5 and 85.5 bullets. A lot of guys like the 88 ELD but it doesn't appear to be very stable in an 8 twist, according to Berger's calculator.

I run a 1-7, 26” with the 80smks. Pushed fast or slow, they are exceptional. I haven’t pushed anything faster than 3300 fps though.

I don’t know my reamer specs, but I know it was designed to shoot 90 SMK’s per Gary Eliseo.

Barrel life is awesome. I’ve run two barrels at or above 2k rounds with plenty of accuracy for NRA Highpower (600-40x at the January Prone Match and a 199-7 at the state championship.

I have a Shilen 1/7.5 ratchet and no issues with 80 ELDX. Standard SAAMI freebore. I have kept velocity to the 3250 fps range though.

I would say >80 gr would be best off with 1/7, 80 or below 1/7.5 or 1/8 would be fine and a little less risk of blowing up bullets.

Also I think 3600 fps with a 75 ELDM is probably only achievable with RL26, which is unobtainable now. I haven't seen those velocities and per Peterson's load data that is about 150 fps faster than their max.

An 8 twist is ideal for the majority of 75-80 class bullets.

If you want to go heavier tread lightly with twist rate or you’ll find yourself losing jackets.

8 twist on mine, 22” barrel, 80 Bergers north of 3300.

Accuracy is very good.

That Berger calculator... Hmmm. Keep it mind it says that their calculator does not say that it won't shoot. Just that the bc may not be "optimum".

The 88s shoot 3150 in my 22xc into teeny groups in an 8 twist. The 22 CM will go even faster than that. Terminal spin for 8 twist is 3500.

I hate to sound dumb but could you explain what you mean by this? Are you saying that if I go with a twist faster than 8, I may lose jackets? I don't understand...

I believe he’s stating that at 3500fps an 88 ELD will shed its jacket due to too high of RPMs

That’s around 315k RPM which is quite high for a big bullet.

I’ve ran the 75 Berger from an 8 twist rifle just over 3500 and not lost jackets.

I’ve read 88 ELDs are more susceptible to this.

Evan has a thread on here regarding a 22 Br and jackets coming off due to velocity. It’s a good read.

I assumed that was what he was getting at, but I'm a little confused as to why a heavier bullet would lose a jacket before a lighter bullet...

Do you have a link to the thread you mentioned?

I don’t think it has to do with weight.

It’s just a coincidence in this case.

64 grain Berger varmints blew up at 3550 from a 22-250ai had years ago.

A white puff about 30 yards out.

Mostly has to do with the way a bullet is constructed.

I believe it’s in this thread

At 22CM speeds, 8T w/88 ELD-M’s does fine.

It’s the jacket, not the weight that matters. At 3200 fps and 7T the rpm is approximately 330,000 rpm and some bullets just come apart. In general you need to keep bullets under 300,000 rpm. Some will tolerate more, some need less. An 8T will give you approximately 288000 rpm.

1-8 at 2700’ and up works great for me with 75-88 gr Eldms … 22-250 AI but basically twin to 22 CM. I d say .060-.080 FB for 80 s down and if you really want to run heavies you ll need .150 or so FB.
