22 Creedmoor, Anyone have any Firsthand Knowledge?

Jim,

No first hand experience here, but there is a guy over on the "Hide" that has one.

JKS is his screen name, I`m lead to believe he isn`t on the New version of the hide but his posts are available to be viewed in their archives.

Robert Whitley has .243 30* improved dies, a bushing die would make a .22-243 30* imp. pretty easy, I am tossing this option around pretty seriously.

I have a really good friend that shoots a .22-243 40*imp. and he feeds it from an ACIS mag. he says he`s never had a feeding issue with it, I believe him, he has no reason to lie about it.

When something fails him, he`ll make it known that it didn`t work.

Sooo now to do the 30* or just "go for it" and do the 40* shoulder is my hang up.....too many choices..... ;D

Good luck in your quest.

Phil.

Thanks for the info Phil.

I am still toying with the idea of a 20", .22cal rifle to run 75-90 grain bullets from(I want a short barrel because I will be utilizing a 7" suppressor).

Dave Kiff gave this cartridge a strong recommendation so I am trying to give it due consideration.

Thanks again,
Jim

Jim,

I completely understand, I too liked the simplicity of necking down and shooting...

But I also love to utilize Lapua brass whenever possible, I tend to lean on my loads a bit and strong primer pockets are a plus.

My intent is a calling gun, so it won`t be run hot and the .22-243AI in either 30 or 40 * should be a hammer with the Barnes lead free 70 gr. bullets......as required behind the iron curtain.... >:(

Good luck with your project,

Phil.

Phil,

It sounds like we are both building a gun for the same purpose.

Do you think the 22-243AI perform well in a 20" barrel?

I do not tend to load super hot, but I like to pretty much fill the case with powder. What would be a good powder and load to start with? Would you consider this cartridge to be a throat/barrel burner?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

Fred is loading H1000 with the 75 Amax, velocity is 3585fps. with moly coated bullets, he has a 27" barrel.

He has 2 other friends, using the same reamer, but shooting the 80 Amax.

First load is using Retumbo and getting 3500 fps.

Second load is using H1000 and getting 3440 fps.

These barrels are finished at 26"

As for the "Barrel burner" category.....isn`t that why barrels have threads????

I`m sure this is a barrel burner, but you have to decide how many rounds will you shoot per year and if it is worth it to you, to me it is.

Phil.

Comparing case dimensions between the parent Creedmoor and a 250-3000 improved, other than neck diameter about the only difference is 30 degree shoulder on the Creedmoors vs. 40 on the Ackley 250. Wouldn't that pretty much make a 22 Creedmoor a 22-250 Improved with 30 degree shoulder ?

With a 22-250AI you would have lapua brass available and still be able to run the 75 a-max at 3600 plus with reloader 17

Good lord...really?

I've had some incredible velocity gains with R17, but thats impressive.

How many grains and what length barrel are you using to get those numbers?

im no expert but i call misprint on this one...fastest i could get was 3405 fps with H4350 and that was really really flattening out the primers. 3600 would really really be almost unimaginable.

I use to shoot a 22-243 using RL-22 and an 80 Grain Moly Bullet. I was pushing those out the barrel at 3650-3660 fps on avg with accuracy that folks could only dream for. back in the day I would get called out on so many posts I provided with accuracy results of this round and how it shot at 300 yards that it just isn't worth it any longer to go back thru again. Many have chambered the 22-243 Middlestead a 22-6mm and they still were shooting same velocities as I was and using a lot more powder. So in all honesty and based on my experience anything beyond a .243 case is just a waste of powder. There's just nothing to gain.

I since went to the 22 Dasher and 80 Grain sierra's and back in the day at 600 yard IBS matches and kicked butt in a big way with that round. I was then pushing the bullet out at 3450 fps

James,

What powder were you using in the 22 Dasher with the 80`s????

I have a 22 Dasher that i shoot the 75 Amax out of and while i am very happy with the performance, i like to tinker....

Thanks,

Phil.

I know all barrels are a law unto themselves. Mine is a 26 in 5R Brougton. I have no pressure gauge so I go by my primers. I fired 15 rounds and the primer pockets (Winchester brass) were still not loose. From that I conclude this is not too hot in MY barrel. I am a firm believer in the 5r rifling. I will also point out that this shoots < 0.5 moa. I shot RL19 and 4350 and could not get over 3450 fps.
