22 CHeetah

Anybody out there mess around with the .22 CHeetah ? Thought about putting one together. Doesn't seem that it's performance would be all that much better than a 220 or 22-250. My interest then went to the 22-284. Then I my concern was too much velocity. Obviously the 22-284 is a wildcat that is still used. Just curious about which round seems to be the most stable and accurate at the speeds the bullets are pushed at. Another question is has anyone used a very fast twist(7) in those chambers. Thinking about the 80 or 90 grain smk bullets. I do not see any of those larger cartridge 22 Cal guns spinning bullets that fast. Usually it's the 223 thats using the heavies.

I've got a like new shilen 22 cheetah barrel and dies if you'd be interested. slow twist.

I have a 22/6mm Ackley Remington 8 twist. Shoots Sierra 80 gr bullets up to 3800 fps out of a 30" Krieger. Have shot groundhogs out to 1100 yards. Also have shot 3 shot groups that measure 3 3/4" at 1200 yards also. Reloader 22 powder. These big capacity cartridges are more suited to Heavy for caliber bullets.

The .22Cheetah MK2 is basically the same difference as a .22-243Win, but with a 28° shoulder. The major identifier being, you're necking down .308BR (small primer pocket) brass to make the Cheetah...

The .22Cheetah MK1 is almost a twin to the .22-243AI, as they share the same "improved" 40° shoulder. Same difference in use of .308BR brass for the building Cheetah brass...

The reasoning behind using the small primer pocket BR brass was to be able to run safetly @ higher pressure (same as thex47Lapuas). Shortfall is, that small primers don't seem to want to spark up ~50gr of powder reliably...

Enter the .22-243Win and .22-243AI.

Whole lots more easier to grab any .243Win brass and neck it down to .224 in one step. Necking down from .308 would be tedious, at best. Seeing as how .243brass is everywhere, you could be rockin' a .22-243Win with one pass thru the die. Lapua .243Win brass happens to be excellent, and can take some pressure in the boiler, negating any perceived benefit of the small primer pocket .308BR brass. Beyond that, with a chamber cut for the AI, you can run stout .22-243Win loads to fireform, then enjoy the benefits of the "improved" case from there on, out. The only thing the Cheetahs have on the .22-243Win and .22-243AI is the more cool-er name...;)

Although my .22-243AI can't hang with a monster .22-6mmAI or .22-284, it'll get a 75-80gr boolit going fast enough to reach the threshold of those bullets' integrity. Shoot something semi-substantial with a 75 going much past 3600fps, and you're gonna make a mess! If mess is the main ideal, then no worries! But if ya wanna drop coyotes clean & harvest deer, you don't wanna be over-stressing the bullet's jacket beyond what it can handle. A fast twist .224 can really crank the RPMs...my 75Amaxs are spinnin' to the tune of ~325,000 rpm!!! On that ragged edge, a worn out throat or dirty barrel will begin to cause bullets to come apart, prematurely...

In that regard, the .22-243AI is all that ya need, and nuthin' ya don't. I will always have at least one...

Good luck!
