.22 caliber choice

sPike I have killed a pile of coyotes with my 6xc shooting 70 gr blitzkings. I have 2 of them one in ten twist another in 8 twist. I shoot 105vld bullets in the 8 twist, they hammer coyotes too!

You asked about a 22 cal. and shooting out to 800yds.
22 br.
22 Dasher
22 GT (brass might be coming for this)
22x47
If you run the heavier bullets (85+) you need a fast twist to stabilize them and barrel
life will suffer.
Run a slight lighter, but still high enough B.C. (65-80g) and run a 8 twist
barrel will last longer and no bullets exploding on you.

Looking for opinions/ experience on a heavy twist ( pb 1/7) caliber for varmint / some long range target want to be able to shoot from a 65gr to 80gr ... was considering a 22 creed but wondering about barrel life... would a br be a better choice? Or drop down to let’s say a 223AI? Any opinions would be appreciated ..
If your concern is barrel life, I'd say stick with the .223/223AI Your range will decrease but your barrel life will increase. Range may only be 600-800 on varmints but targets at 1000 is doable. If it were me, I'd not worry about the 500.00 barrel replacement pricing fill your exact needs. 22BR,22-250AI, 22CM, etc. Run an 8 twist 5R barrel and 80s and you'll not need regret it.

You have a trade-off between maximizing velocity or barrel life. The more powder you put behind a small bore caliber the faster the throat will erode. I have both 223 and 223AI that will shoot 1K and they have long barrel lifes. I have a 6mm that shoot 1k and has terminal velocity, but the trade is maybe 1500-2000 barrel life.

I would suggest you determine your distance and then make the caliber decision. 600 yards and closer then .22 caliber, +600yards then 6mm.

With those caveats you now can use a 223 or 223AI and have a longer barrel life and use shelf ammo. If you plan to do a lot of longer distances them 6mm bucks the wind better, increases barrel life, and can take advantage of more efficient case design like 6BR or 6BRA and still have significant improvement of barrel life over a larger Creedmoor cartridge.

I played with a 22-250AI with an 8 twist barrel and had 80's blowing up after 10-12 shots in competition. The barrel just gets too hot. I now shoot a 22BR and it works great out to 600 which is the most I have shot it.

I'm running a 22 br shooting the 95 gr smk. 7 twist. .219 bore which I think is the key to not blowing up bullets. It's my main prs caliber. Right at 1000 rds and no blow ups.

I like my 22 creed for varmints. 77 Custom Comp at around 3200 from a 22 inch 3 groove 7 twist shoots great( better than the 80 Berger )loaded with N555. A fist sized exit on a big coyote at 325 yards DIT.
