.22 cal Pack rat exterminator

For packrats and just plain old RATS, my Beeman R10 .20 cal has done a pretty good job, but unfortunately it's only useable in daytime, and the RATS are most active after dark. We also get the occasional CA ground squirrel out back to jazz things up a bit.

I'm hesitant to put a thermal scope on a pellet gun, but I've given it some thought considering how much RAT activity we have here at the moment.

When I have used live traps it was to avoid collateral damage.
Ah, makes sense. Like dogs, cats, raccoons, etc.

You could put a snap trap inside the cage, so that only a rat-sized critter can get in to the kill trap. (Wire one end gate open. Havahart brand shown.)

Because they are smart and you have to get them used to eating out of the trap for a while before you even set it to actually trap.
Maybe pack rats are that smart, but roof rats certainly aren't. They can't resist peanut butter in a snap trap, and every trap set caught a rat, a dozen or so total, until there were no more in my crawl space. I finally found and sealed up all entrances they were using, which is critical. We never had any rats in our residential area until a few years ago, then suddenly an invasion, likely from the influx of Californians' moving vans, and also the razing of a nearby shopping mall and restaurants. We all had to wise up quickly. They'll always be around now, but keeping them out of your house is not rocket science.
