Is that my mother in law?I have, on Black Rats (Roof Rats, Rattus rattus) but much better are the newer plastic jaw traps such as my choice, Tomcat brand. Never had one fail to kill and hold tight. I bait with peanut butter.

When I have used live traps it was to avoid collateral damage. So why bother with the holding cell? Why not catch and kill it in a single step?

Because they are smart and you have to get them used to eating out of the trap for a while before you even set it to actually trap.So why bother with the holding cell? Why not catch and kill it in a single step?

Maybe pack rats are that smart, but roof rats certainly aren't. They can't resist peanut butter in a snap trap, and every trap set caught a rat, a dozen or so total, until there were no more in my crawl space. I finally found and sealed up all entrances they were using, which is critical. We never had any rats in our residential area until a few years ago, then suddenly an invasion, likely from the influx of Californians' moving vans, and also the razing of a nearby shopping mall and restaurants. We all had to wise up quickly. They'll always be around now, but keeping them out of your house is not rocket science.Because they are smart and you have to get them used to eating out of the trap for a while before you even set it to actually trap.
