22 BRA

Anyone done a .22 BRA? With the new heavy high BC .22 bullets available, this could be a cool cartridge. I think the 88 ELD's or 95 SMK's would work great with a cartridge like this.

Be curious to hear what people's experiences has been, what twist rates have worked, etc.

I was just thinking this was a logical (and obvious) step for the BRA. I'd be very interested in it myself.

I’m doing a 223ai solely beacause of all the 1x field LC brass I have. If it wasn’t for that, I’d be looking to a BR variant.

In a repeater, if they made AI style mags that took 2.65" OACL, I would do 223AI and call it good.

I have a single shot at 2.614 OACL, a light load in a 28" barrel is over 2800 fps. 4 cycles and not a hint of a loose primer pocket.

My new coyote rifle is a 22BRA. It's a 23" 10-twist with a suppressor. Shooting 55 gr. Sierra Blitzkings and 64 gr. Berger Varmints. Still fire forming and both bullets are just a little over 3200 fps with Benchmark. Not sure what the upper limit will be when I step on it with the formed brass. I also loaded up a handful of 62 gr. Barnes TTSX that are in the high 3100s for deer hunting. My wife and I snuck up on a bedded doe and from about 200 yards away she punched her right through both lungs. Flopped right over. My son shot a doe with that same bullet that was looking right at us from about 150 yards away and dropped her right in her tracks. Very fun little cartridge. I bet it would be a blast to set up a mid-range F-Class rifle in that cartridge and shoot the heavies.

I have a 22 BR with the shoulder blown .050 out that should be identical to the capacity of the BRA. 88gr elds are shooting at basically 3000 fps and the 95 smk are at basically 2900 fps. Both of these out of a 24" tube. There may be more to be had with different powders as I used AA2700 and N160 respectively.
I have a new barrel and reamer with proper throat that will be finished at 29". I hope to report on this soon but I have been forming brass and shooting shoots with the old barrel for now. All of this will be over soon and I should be barreled up new by the end of January. When I get some serious numbers and data I will report back.

You're on the right track.

I am just starting a 22PPC (the "forgotten cartridge") project. I have been down the 22BR road and it is a fine chambering, but the neck down process is a major P.I.T.A. I have necked down many different cartridges over the years and will never do it again. Perfornance with the PPC is virtually identical without that hassle and you still have excellent Lapua brass.

Recent introduction of high BC 22cal bullets make this idea viable, at least out to 600yds. The Hornady 75gr ELD-M with G7 BC of .235 is accurate and cheap ($.19ea). Heavier 80-95gr bullets offer no advantage over the 75 when you consider the velocity/BC trade-off, and the 75's are a lot cheaper. In addition, the 75 works in 1:8 twist while the heavies require 1:6.5-1:7 which puts a lot more stress on the jackets, probably reducing accuracy even if they don't blow up.

If you run the numbers, the difference in drift at 600yds is minimal and you have about 40% less recoil with the 22/75gr vs 6/105-107gr.

Keep in mind that these suggestions are meant for the 300M-600yd game. At 1000 you're probably better off with the 6BRI.

Does it feed okay? If so what are you using for a magazine?

As strange as it sounds, I set it up as a single shot, but not because I was worried about feeding. I didn’t even ask around if that was an issue, I guess.

To get mine to feed properly in AICS mags I had to buy the 5 round AICS and use the 419 extension. I fell into this by accident BTW but they feed like butter.
The American rifle would not feed nor would the 10 round AICS. The MDT poly mags work but only so/so.
I tried 2 different "kits" to change an AICS or American Rifle into a BR mag and neither worked.
All of the above is specific to a Curtis action and MPA chassis so it is highly possible other combos may work. Don't flame me because yours works and did not for me. Just reporting my results and combo.
There are tutorials on the web for modding a factory remmy mag to BR but I have not tried that yet.
If your heart is set on the round I am certain you can get around reliable feeding so don't let that put off trying a great little round.

I bought 6BR/Dasher AICS mag adapters and they work great. I am going back to 6Creedmoor, so If you are interested I would sell two adapter kits at half price ($40/both).The brand is Patriot Valley Arms and these are for the Accurate mag, NOT AICS. Externally they are the same, but there is a minor interior difference.. They are super easy to install.

Thank you for offering that up. I actually prefer a single shot. I like the pressure of knowing I only get one chance :).

I'm going the same route because I'm tired of necking down.

Try the 75gr ELD-M. Low cost, high BC.

I like to shoot farther out so the 88's would be more appropriate. .545 G1BC going over 2800 would be fine. That 's what my 223AI does but it's a single shot.
