22 BR plus .050 and 95gr SMK

I have finally finished remodeling my main PRS rig and have a few interesting observations to share.

The rifle is a curtis axiom action, mpa chassis, bartlein 29" heqvy palma 7 twist with 4 port brake and wears a USO B17 scope.
The brass is 6BR Lapua necked down and the shoulder blown forward .050 with no change to the shoulder angle. Case capacity is 39.8 H2O and the reamer has a long throat made specifically for the 95gr SMK.

I am shooting N160 powder and the load is shooting at 2985fps at 45 degrees. I will assume that the velocity will be right at my target speed of 3000 when the temps get in the 80 plus range. I do not at present have good data on temp sensitivity but I have logged every days firings and will hope to come back and update this thread for those interested. The powder was chosen specifically for its cooler btu value to extend my bbl life into the 3,000 plus round count.

Now for the very interesting part, the bullet. I have dabbled with the 95 SMK in my 22250AI in the past and had less than stellar accuracy, mostly due to fliers, but they showed higher than advertised BC value.
With this BR round I was able to get rid of the fliers and the gun shot at about half inch with all seating depths. Because this is a PRS gun I was hesitant to seat into the lands but thankfully I went ahead and seated out .005 into the lands. To my surprise these bullets in my combo really likes that seating depth with a light jam. I went from half inch to 3 five shot groups of 1/4 to 3/8 inch and that was off of an uncomfortable bag set up. I didnt expect them to shoot anything different than the half moa I was getting so I didnt bother setting up well. To my surprise I was printing ragged hole groups.
Remember that higher than advertised BC value from before? Well I am using a BC number of .320 G7 to get my trajectory charts to align with the drops I actually shot. If my memory is correct I was using something like .315 to get things to line out with the 22250AI.
I was able to shoot trajectory validation from 500 to 908 yards yesterday and I am not able to explain my drop correction other than to believe the bullets do indeed have a bigher than advertised BC.

Completely happy with how things turned out on this build but I can tell you that the way I cut the chamber there really was no other choice but to use the 95SMKs. Thats a pretty spooky proposition but in this case it all came together very well. If I come up with any more data to add to this post I will revisit at a later date as I know there has been a fair amount of interest in this bullet and the 22 BR based cartridges lately. Thanks for reading.

This sounds fairly interesting.

Do you have a pic of that case next to a standard 22BR?

I do not have any pix. I will try to grab some tomorrow if I get a chance to reload again. The bearing surface is so long the loaded rounds look very unique when loaded to the neck shoulder juncture.

The seater needs to be lapped into the bullets, It's an older set of Reddings. I have had no time to get to where I want to be due to "life" at present. The cases are champhered and prepped and everything shoots adequate but I need to find time to work on lapping the seater stem. That literally may not happen for a few months and I am forced to run what I brung just to get by until I get time.

Redding makes VLD seater stems in two different lengths. Not sure which one you might need; I use the shorter Comp version with 90 VLDs and 95 SMKs in my Redding .223 Rem Type S Match seater dies. It does make a difference where you will be with regard to the micrometer setting/adjustment. As I recall, the price was very reasonable. If they have one to fit your die, it might be an easier approach just to buy one if life is getting in the way of shooting.

WOW! Very nice and Very interesting build. It sounds like you found the right combo for that bullet. Please keep us up to date on any 600 and 1000 yard experiments you might try.
I know the feeling about jamming but I found the same kind of results jamming Berger 80's and 82's in my standard 22BR and ended up jamming .020 for best results with light neck tension.
It's been a while but if memory serves me right you should be able to compete theoretically with the 6mm's out to 1000.
GOOD JOB!!

I appreciate that. Will look the numbers up.

PS: I like the name "22BR PLUS"

No idea what to call it actually and I take no pride in it. Just an idea I had that seems to work.

As of right now I should be able to go toe to toe with the top echelon of 6mm shooters. I think the only thing that has the same BC is the Dtacs and it would take a 6xc or larger to run 3000 fps with std bbl lengths.

congrats on your new set up... I am also enjoying the 95's and in 2 test sessions, getting some really tight groups at 185yds.

I am shooting them out of a 22 creedmoor. Can't wait for the snow to melt and start pushing them out further.

Good luck with your project.

Jerry

Anybody have info regarding how the 95 SMK measures compared to the 88 ELD Hornadys? With the bullets the same distance off the lands, how much difference is there in OAL?

Awesome looking and shooting rifle. Tell us about the Curtis action if you would. Do the cases feed and eject correctly? Seems like it would be a fun rifle to compete with. Nicely done!!:D:D

What will you charge for a copy of the reamer print and is your chamber cut such that the 95 SMK's are just touching the lands when those bullets are seated at boat tail/body junction at neck shoulder junction if I may ask??

Boltfluter,
The Curtis action is fine. I am honestly not 100% sure how I feel about it. As most probably know its a three lug, 60 degree bolt and I assume since you are cocking on 2/3 of the average bolt throw it's pretty darn smooth. The take down of the bolt assembly is my favorite of the 3 customs I own. I had the bolt DLC'd and made my own bolt handle and extended the length about 3/8" which "seemed" to help but this is probably in my mind since I dont cycle the bolt on the end. The new bolt handle does apply pressure over a larger portion of my hand with a better grip which probably makes it feel better. The action has had 3 barrels now and probably 3500ish rounds without any real hickups so it's proven.

Getting that round to run in this action was a pain and the fix was an accident. I tried two versions of the AICS BR kits. Neither worked. I had bought a 419 extender for my 10 round mags to use during the 12 round stages on the old 22250AI configuration but the extender did not work like I planned. I ended up putting the extender on a 5rnd mag and it worked fine for the 22250AI.
I set back the old bbl and chambered it to the present cartridge. My buddy came down and shot his first match with it at which time I told him there were feeding issues. That 5 round mag with the 419 extender was in my shooting bag and he grabbed it because he liked the looks of it. That magazine fed flawless. I bought a second 5rnd and 419 extender and that mag also feeds flawless. Both mags are standard configuration, meaning no BR kits.
I shot this system for my first 2 shoots this year forming brass on the old barrel and the mags fed so smooth at times I thought it didn't pick up a round. I ended up throwing live rounds on the ground and rechambering thinking I had no round chambered.

This project has been a lot of fun and a lot of luck. I still need to get some temp stability data and drops from 900 to 1500 shot and verified but I feel very confident going into this season.

You dont need a copy of my print. It's a 22 BR Remington reamer using 22 BR Lapua brass which is where the .050 comes from. I did set the chamber for this bullet specifically. I am actually a bit long and if I was going to do this again I would probably set the freebore .020 back. I expected to jump bullets and that kind of backfired.
I do not remember the freebore but it is on the reamer I think and I also have a print somewhere I believe. Send me a PM with your e-addy or cell and I will try to find the print for you.

It looks like your boat tail bearing surface junction is right at the neck/shoulder junction. I'd throat it out farther to get away from potential doughnuts.
